数多くのヒット曲を相手にコレ一枚でOKという無謀な主張する気はありませんが、
1.The Village Preservation Society
6.Big Sky
9.Village Green
が名曲です。だからと言ってベスト版で聞くとピンとこないので、
どうしても1枚と言われれば、迷わずこのアルバムをお勧めします。

当時はこの「ステレオ版」と、入っている曲の一部違う「モノラル版」が出ていたそうです。

この両方が入ったお得なCDもあります。

でもまあ欲張らずに、この40分をまったりと聞くのも苦しゅうないです。

歴史に残るヒットの少ないキンクスは、BeatlesやStonesの影に隠れた存在かもしれません。
キンクスといえば初期のキンキーサウンドと称される、ノリの良いロックばかりがピックアップされがちですが、（それはそれでかっこいいですが）このアルバムで見せたようなフォークサウンドの一面も持っていることをもっと皆さんに知って欲しい。
キンクスのフォークサイドは、なんだかユーモラスで、シニカルで他のバンドのそれとは違う気がします。
例えるなら、フォークっぽい色というとモノクロだったりセピア色だったり地味な色調のイメージですが、キンクスの演奏は色んな色が見えるカラフルな感じ。（わかりにくいかな？）
とにかく何度も聴きたくなる名盤です。
聴いたことの無い方は一度聞いてみてください。
キンクスというバンドの奥深さを知ることができると思います。

私の中ではビートルズやストーンズと並ぶバンド。
大物来日ブームに乗ってまた日本に来てくれる日を心待ちにしています。

　1968年の若者。ベトナム戦争反対デモ。ヒッピー文化。ドラッグにフリーセックス。そんな若者たちのラヴ＆ピースな日々のいぶきこそロックンロールだったといえば、言いすぎだろうか。
　ロックンロールバンドのキンクスが1968年に発表した"The Village Green Preservation Society"は、こんな歌詞だ。
　　
　"俺達は村の緑を守る会　
　 神よ　ストロベリージャムをいろんな種類のジャムをお守り下さい
　 昔のやり方を虐待の手から守ろう
　 新しいやり方を防ぐんだ、僕と君のために
　 他に何ができるというのだろう"
　
　こんな牧歌的な歌を、誰が1968年に手に取るだろう。このアルバムは1968年の温かい闇の中で静かに消えていった。
　なぜキンクスは、こんなアルバムを作ったのか？　
　彼らがイギリス人だったからだ。
　イギリスが誇りで、ロンドン郊外の田園生活が好きだったからだ。朝に飲む紅茶、午後のおやつのカスタードパイ。古いチューダー様式の邸宅で、夕食の後には家族みんなでビリヤードをする生活。
　キンクスはそういう暮らしを歌おうとしたのだ。
　切迫感だけは持ち合わせている若者として。一瞬の旋律に賭ける、詩人として。
　
　ロックの本質の一つが誠実であるなら、1968年のキンクスは地球で最も誠実なロックンロールバンドだったと思う。
