サントラに手を染める前のライ・クーダーのアルバムはどれも佳作揃いで、甲乙付けがたいのですが、中でも｢紫の峡谷｣とこのアルバムが最もよく聞いた作品であると断言できます。｢ジャズ｣とタイトルにありますが、バップ以降のいわゆるジャズではなく、日本語の語感で言えばディキシーランド・ジャズという言葉がぴったりな楽曲が並んでおり、バックのミュージシャンもそれに因む人たちが集められています。ライのギターについては僕なんかが云々するのはおこがましくて僭越に過ぎるので遠慮しますが、一曲目の掛け合いからソロと、思わず顔がほころぶフレーズが満載です。

Ry Cooderのギターの巧さと、選曲のセンスのよさが光る一枚。
Ry自身が「失敗作」というインタビューがあったために、評価が低いところもあるが、これは大傑作です。
David Lindleyも参加。

このアルバムはJAZZというよりはラグタイム、賛美歌などJAZZの原型をライの独創的感覚により再現したような作品。
それにメキシカン的な楽器、カリブ的な要素をうまく取り入れ味わい深い作品に仕上げている。
ジャズ界のオリジネーターの1人　アールハインズとの競演を録音できたことは歴史的な奇跡であり、これを楽しめる私たちは幸せ者である。
