1976年春に発表された"Takin' It To The Street"の最初の曲"Wheels of Fortune"を聞いたときはびっくりした。ステレオサウンドを目一杯使ったトリプルリードギター。ツインドラムスもかっこよかった。しかし、ドゥービーの方向が見えなくて中途半場だという印象は否めなかった。しかしこのアルバムはマイクマクドナルドが前面に立ち、ジャジーでお洒落な仕上がりになっている。グラミー賞の名曲（２）やニューヨーク調の（３）や（１０）などメロディもサウンドも素敵だ。なにより特筆ものはドゥービーのハーモニーワーク。（９）あたりの曲をさらりとやってしまうところに彼らの実力が見える。バンドサウンドという面ではある種の到達点にいっていると思われるほどの結晶度の高さだ。

このアルバムは、”いわゆるロックバンド”としてのドゥービーのベスト作品とは言えないかもしれないが、
ジャケットに並ぶこの顔ぶれのドゥービーでなければ作れなかった、
「Adult Contemporaryの超傑作」であることは間違いない。

”新しくて、良い音楽”を作ろうと努力した結果、抜群のテクのｇバンドとしての魅力に加えて、
前作で試みられた新しい一面が見事に開花し、起伏に富んだ名盤を生んだと言ってよい。

売れたのはマクドナルドが中心になったからとされるが、
メンバー変更後の次作「One Step Closer」がマクドナルドに寄りかかり、結局散漫な出来栄えに終わったことを見れば、
成功の要因は、”このメンバーが生み出した音楽”であることがわかる。

タイランンのソリッドなｂは曲が甘さに走ることを押さえ、パットのｇリフがロックグルーヴを注入、
ジェフは初期Steely Danからのインスピレションあふれるｇプレイを、
ｄｓは十八番のツインはなく抑え気味ながらも、３点セットで心地よいビートを軽快に叩き出す。

ＬＰではデカかった”Doobie”の写真が、ＣＤでは小さくなっているけれど、
３０年近い年を経ても聞くたびに、常に”Contemporary”な響きがする名アルバムだ。

私が中学生だったころ、ある電気屋さんでここに収められている「What a fool believes」が流れていたのを耳にし感動した記憶があります。ソウルフルなリズムにイントロとサビの部分のキーボードリフがとても印象的で心地良く、当時歌謡曲しか知らなかった私はこの曲に衝撃を受けました。最近テレビのＣＭでリメイク版を耳にしましたが、この曲がリリースされた後、日本の音楽業界に大きな影響力があったのか、良く似たキーボードリフが流れている歌謡曲をたくさんテレビで耳にした記憶があります。それからこのナンバーをきっかけに私はあまり歌謡曲は聴かなくなりました。私にとっても日本の音楽業界にとってもこのナンバーはインパクトを与えた傑作ではないかと思います。アルバム自体の出来も、当時の新鋭Ｍ・マクドナルドの才能が見事に開花し、以前のドゥービーのイメージを塗り替える位ポップな作品に仕上げています。ドゥービーファンにとって賛否両論に分かれる衝撃的作品ですが私にとっては◎です。
