オジー在席時の最後のアルバム。トニーアイオミとの対立が原因ともいわれているが、実際は殆どアル中だったオジーがクビになったというのが真相らしい。さてこのアルバム、パラノイドやマスターオブリアリティーでサバスにはまった人がいきなり聴くと少々面食らうかもしれない。ここにはかつてのどろどろヘヴィーなサバスはいない。前作までにキーボードの大々的な導入やストリングスや合唱団をいれたりしてきたが、結局何をやっても以前のような大きな人気を取り戻すことはできなかった。そのような経緯があるためか、本作はサバスがやけっぱちで作ったアルバムという評価であることが多いようだ。でも今改めて聴きなおしてみると結構いけるように思う。英国では一応ベスト10に入ったアルバムだけあって出来そのものは悪くない。ただサバスの持つイメージから程遠いだけのことだ。えっ?そこが大事だって?うーん。でもサバスしか聴かない人ならともかく、いろいろ聴いてる人ならこの良さをわかってくれると思うんだけどなぁー。

アルバム全体的に淡々と聴かせる感じです。
音的にはプログレッシブな印象です。

バンドを一時脱退したオジーが、結局行く所が無くなり、
とりあえずもう一度サバスに復帰して作られたアルバム、だったと記憶していますが、
そんな状況でのオジーのテンションの低さが淡々とした印象を
かもし出しているのかもしれません。
あくまで私的な印象ですが。

らしくない作品としてサバスファンから敬遠されがちなアルバムですが、
サバスという固定概念を捨て、Never Say Die!と言う単一のロックアルバムとして聴くと
それはそれは素晴らしい名盤だと思います。
フランジャーを多用したトニーのギターは
バンドの新たな方向性を模索しているようにも見え、
以前のへヴィロックバンドからの脱却を試行錯誤していたのではないか、とも思えます。

ハードロックに明け暮れていた高校時代だが、その終焉頃に耳にしたのがこのアルバムだった。当時メジャーどころのアルバムはほとんど一度は耳にし、それぞれに飽きかけていた頃だった。そんなとき、友人がこのアルバムと「テクニカルエクスタシー」を貸してくれた。

そのころのオジー在籍時のブラックサバスの印象と言えば、ソロのオジー、ディオの加入したサバスに完全に屈していた。従ってこの全く無名のアルバムも聞き流すつもりだった。

１曲目の「Never Say　Die!」を聞いて、ずいぶんポップ色になったんだなと思った。しかし、３曲目の「Junior's Eyes」はジャズ風だし、６曲目「Air Dance」７曲目の「Over To You」はとてもメロディアスで、かつての「Iron Man」のような泥臭さからは解放され、超名盤とは言えないが、自分にとって何度でも聴きたいアルバムに変わった。

キーボードではこの後、有名バンドを渡り歩くドン・エイリーが参加。とはいえ、彼のキーボードでこのアルバムに深みが出たことは間違いない。
