   ヴォーカルはもちろん、ギタリストとしての才能も発揮したジョージ・ベンソンは、ジャズファンばかりでなく一般的にも人気が高い。彼はギタリストとして初めてマイルスのグループに参加した実力派だ。そのころも歌っていたが、レオン・ラッセルの『マスカレード』を歌った本盤がとてつもない大ヒットになったことで、いっそう歌に力を入れるようになった。
   70年代フュージョンブームの火つけ役となったこのアルバムは、ベンソン自身のその後にも大きな影響を与えた。実は歌っているのは<2>だけで、ほかはシンプルで心地よいフュージョンサウンドにのってギターを弾いている。タイトル曲『ブリージン』などはその名のとおり、最初からさわやかさが爆発している。本作はシングルバージョンの『マスカレード』など、3曲増えたデラックス・エディションとなっている。（高木宏真）

4曲目の、「私の主張」、わけわかんないタイトルだが、ホセ・フェリシアーノの作った「アファメイション」と言ったほうが通りがよいんじゃないかと思う。本テイクは、かつてベンソン自身が、「わたしのベスト」と自画自賛したというほどの名演で、これでアドリブかー！と叫びたくなる。

ワンコード一発のベンソンも凄いが、アファメイションのようなポップなコード進行で、ここまでバネがきいてワクワクするソロを弾けるのは、ベンソンをおいてないだろう。この1曲だけのためにこのアルバムはある。

ほかは、ブリージンがときどきＢＧＭ的に使われるので、割とよく耳にしているかもしれない。マスカレードは、ベンソンが歌モノにはまっていくきっかけになったので、たしかに名演だけど、彼のギターを聴きたい私としては、複雑な思いだ。

ちなみに、ギターだけに焦点を当てれば、ブリージン以前のＣＴＩ時代のベンソンのほうが凄まじく、聴きごたえがある。とはいえ、ヴォーカルも含めてトータルにベンソンを楽しみたい人もいるだろうから、結局この作品がおすすめである。たいていのフュージョンは古臭く聴こえるが、本作品は、部分的にクサいところはあっても、みずみずしい雰囲気を保っていると思う。

今聞くと懐かしさを覚える1枚。BENSON自身も30年でかなり変容を見せてきたが、商業的に成功する契機になった傑作。タイトル曲をはじめ
マスカレードなど聞き応え十分な名曲ぞろい。特にアファメーションの流れるようなメロディは鳥肌がたつくらい素晴らしい。ベンソンは
もちろんであるが、ドラムスのハービーメイソンのノリ、クラウスオーガマンのアレンジも秀麗で文句のつけようがない。一家に1枚クラスの
アルバムである。

一流ジャズギタリストとしての地位を築いていたジョージ・ベンソンのフュージョン系作品第一弾で、大ヒットセンセーションとなり、その時代の音楽シーンを変えたアルバムとして今も語り継がれています。ベンソンのボーカリストとしての多才な力量をみせ、新境地となった名曲＜マスカレード＞は秀逸です。また、クラウス・オーガーマンのストリングスアレンジは、ジャズ、クラシック、ポップスを超越した普遍的な美しさを奏でています。一流のミュージシャン、アレンジャー、プロデューサーらによって作られた時代の申し子です。
