’７３年発表、１stアルバムです。
恐らく、誰に聴いても傑作、名盤などの言葉で飾られる有名なアルバムなので、あえてお薦めするまでも無いでしょう。
ヘビー・ファンクの名曲「FRANKENSTEIN」で知られるエドガー・ウィンター・グループのギターリスト、ロニー・モントローズを中心として結成されましたが、エドガー・ウィンター・グループ在籍時の演奏は凡庸で、上手さが感じられませんでした。
しかし本作では力強く適確なピッキングで、中高音部が充実した、抜けの良いレスポールサウンドを聴かせてくれます。かなり、練習してから自信を持って録音に臨んだのが分かる、充実した演奏になっています。
ドラム、ベースが重く、中低音がかなり強調されていますが、高音部の抜けが良くカラッとしているので、腰があって明るいサウンドという印象をうけます。
ミディアムテンポのヘビーなナンバーから、アップテンポのハードドライブなナンバーまで、全曲圧倒的なパワーで押しまくりますが一本調子にならない、起伏のある楽曲のつくり方に上手さを感じます。

RONNIE MONTROSE率いるMONTROSEのデビュー作であり、RED ROCKER, SAMMY HAGARのデビュー作でもある本作は、今もなおストレートで勢いのあるハードロックのお手本として語られるアルバムです。Sammyのライブで今もプレイされる2、6をはじめ、SammyがJUSTICE BROTHERS時代に書いたとされる楽曲は今もなお輝きを放っています。多くの人が持つ爽快感、あるいは豪快さといったアメリカンハードロックのイメージは本作によるところが大きいものと思われます。AEROSMITH,KISS,VAN HALENの影に隠れがちではありますが、これを聞かずしてアメリカンロックは語れない70年代の名盤。

アメリカにおけるハード/ヘヴィーロックはニューヨークを中心としたイーストコーストのものと考えられていた時代のことだ。今でこそベイエリア出身のヘヴィーメタルバンドなど掃いて捨てる程いるが、モントローズが登場した当時のウエストコーストのロックシーンと言えば、イーグルスをはじめとするいわゆるウエストコーストサウンドやファンク系の音楽が全盛だったのです。そんななかを何の前触れもなくギンギンのハードロックバンドであるモントローズが突如出現したのです。その衝撃はどれだけ大きかったことでしょうか。私には想像もつきません。モントローズは商業的に大成功したとは言い難いのですが、後のアメリカンハードロックの歴史をたどれば、いかに偉大な足跡を残したかは誰にでもわかることです。このアルバムにはハードロックのクラシックナンバーが何曲も収録されています。ハードロックファンなら聴いたことのある曲ばかりだと思います。ちなみにキッスの06年日本公演で流れていたのは、バッドモータースクーターです。
