70年代後半,シティー・ボーイ&ガールにとってそれほど重くはなく,かと云ってポップ過ぎない,クロウトが気楽に演っているといった感じ…ソフト&メロウ,シティ・ミュージックが人気を集めた。その旗手となったのがマイケルだ。とても上手いとは言えないがじっくり聴かせるには最適なヴォーカル,しかも自作で,バックは一流フュージョン。「アントニオの歌」で知られる『スリーピング…』(76年)はクルセイダーズ系,『パッション…』(83年)はNYフュージョン総動員の実にオトナの洒落たサウンドだった。

ぱっと思い出す限りでも今井美樹さんや、ローラフィジーなんかが素敵にカバーした"The Lady Wants To Know"や、マイケルフランクスと言えばこれ！ということに最早イメージが確立してしまった感のある"アントニオの歌"が入った大傑作。彼のアルバムでは一番人気で一番有名なんじゃないか。デビッドサンボーン、ラリーカールトン、マイケルブレッカー等々の有名凄腕ミュージシャンが参加しているところもポイントが高い！　でも特にジョーサンプルのさりげないサポートと歌心のあるキーボードソロがほんとうに涙が出るほど素晴らしいですよ！　トムジョビンにデディケートした"アントニオの歌"では、メンバー全員が集中力のある繊細な演奏に徹していてほんとに感動的なので、まだこのアルバムを聴いたことが無い人はぜひとも一つ買って聴いてチョ。まず何と言っても、ジョーサンプルのピアノが絶妙に歌伴していてひたすら感動。ピアノソロは、ここぞとばかりに彼の繊細さが全面に出た一生心に残ってしまうような完璧なソロ。そして曲の終わりに、デビッドサンボーンの彼独特のコブシの効いた入魂のソロが。。凄いです。いつまでも聴いた人々の心に残り続けるであろう偉大な作品

ＡＯＲを語るにおいては真っ先に挙げるべきアルバムがマイケル・フランクスのこの作品だ。
パキパキしたところが一切なく、ひたすらゆったりとした時間を提供してくれる作品。しかしそれでいて飽きる事もないのはバックの演奏陣の確かな技術があるからこそ。特にギターのバッキングには、その手法も含めて唸らされる点が非常に多い。
マイケル・フランクスのＶｏは大変穏やかで、歌の技術とか発声が云々…といった類いの事はどうでも良く思わせてくれるのが良い。この“危うい脆さ”を孕んだような適度な不安定感がまたリラックスさせてくれるのだと思う。
夏の日の夕方あたりに、ビール片手に聴くには最適の名作。

カールトンのギターではじまる１曲目は、トロピカルでなく、サンビーム。ぜひ、アナログのジャケットを見つめながら味わってほしい。ブルージーな３曲目は秀逸。ボッサな８曲目も、コーヒータイムにおすすめであるが、やはり、圧倒的な存在である６曲目については、ボッサの伝道者を天国に送った今、涙なしには聞けない。ただ、ただ、あなたに感謝します。太陽のような素晴らしい音楽をありがとう。
