▼これ、「ドゥービー天国」は友達のCDラックに埋もれてたのを聞いてビックリしたんです。ほ~んと久しぶりに感動しました。３０年前の作品を聞いてこんなに感動できるなんて思ってもいなかったッス。
実はドゥービーのベストはず~っと「Captain & Me」だと信じてて、しかもこの「ドゥービー天国」、有名どころと言ったら「Black Water」しか入っておらんし、ぜんぜん聞きたいとも思ってなかったんですが、まったくもって不覚でした。▼なんつっても一曲一曲がスリリング。構成がしっかりしてるっつーか、練れてるっつーか、「さわやかなオールマンブラザースバンド」っつーか、つまり演奏が素晴らしいんだな。この人たちがここまで上手な人たちとはまったく認識してなかった。いやあ失敬した。▼これに比べたら「Captain & Me」はキャッチーな曲が集まった「初心者向け」ってな感じがします。演奏が充実してるとやっぱ「深み」ってのが発生するってこってすね。しかもこの人たちのことだから当然オールマンブラザースバンドみたいにこもったりしてなくてあくまで爽やか。ろくに音楽にキョーミのないわが伴侶も素直にノッテました。▼「Rock　Album１００選」ってなような本に載るのはやっぱ「Natural Thing」と「Long Train Running」と「China Glove」が立て続けに入ってる「Captain & Me」なんだろうが、「マジなRock FreakのためのAlbum１００選」となったらこっちなんじゃないすかね。いやあ、ほんとにカンドーしました。

マイケル・ホザック(ds)、ジェフ・バクスター(g)の参加によるドゥービーの真骨頂の確立、マルチ・ヒット曲の収録と、話題性とポピュラリティの点を踏まえると、前作(3rdアルバム)の"The Captain and Me"('73年作)が最高傑作!と口を揃えるロック・ファンが多い事は承知しています(確かに素晴らしい出来の作品に違いありません)。
本作('74年作)は4thアルバムにあたり、彼ら初の全米#1ヒットになった[4]が収録されているものの、前作の勢いのお陰で少々日当たりが悪くなってしまっている(?)ような所もあるのではないかと。
プロデュースも前作と同じテッド・テンプルマン。メンバーにしても変動はなし。これまでのように歯切れの良いソリッドなリフと明快なメロディー・ライン、ツインドラムによるドライヴ感、または、パット・シモンズのライティングに見られるアコースティックな優しさ等は相変わらず心地良いものです。"では何が変わったのか?"と言えば、[1]、[5]、[7]のような、これまでには無かったホーンセクションの導入という点が一つ挙げられるのではないでしょうか?
(一先ず)ウェスト・コースト系であろう彼らの楽曲が、今までよりもサザン・ロック的な響き(例えば[6]、[7])を湛えているように感じるのもまた一つ挙げられるかも知れません。
本質的に彼らが持っている豊かな演奏力と表現力を背景に、"こんなことやってみても、面白いかもしれない"といった発想(?)が詰め込まれた本作も(ある意味で、変化のある)面白い作品なのだと思います。
閑話：
(直訳すれば)"一度の悪さが癖になり"というアルバムタイトルも、バンド名の"ドゥービー"に引っ掛けている(?)かのようで、何とも面白いですね。

4が初の全米ナンバー１に輝いた記念碑的作品ですが、全体の印象はヒット曲満載の前作、格段のレベルアップを果たした次作に比べるとかなり地味です。ツインドラムを生かした6、メンフィス・ホーンとの共演によるファンクチューンの7、名曲と呼ばれている10、パット・シモンズのソングライティングが冴えた11と、いい曲はあるんですが、どうしても見劣りしていまう内容です。ただ、ドゥービーといえば、ディストーションギターでギンギンにブギっていた当時の印象からすると、ケイジャンブルースの4はかなり新鮮で、パット・シモンズの成長とともに、グループの幅が広がってきたことを認識できる一枚です。アルバムタイトルの「以前は悪いことだったけど今では習慣」は、もちろんグループ名にもなっている麻薬のことらしいですが、なかなか粋なタイトルだと思います。
