70年代初頭のオークランドをベースにしたさまざまなバンドで構成されたタワー・オブ・パワーは、当時人気だったロック・ホーン・バンドへの西海岸からの答えだ。だが、シカゴをはじめとする彼らのライバルたちがキャッチーなホーンのヒット曲や当たり障りのないリリックに頼っていたのに対し、タワー・オブ・パワーは同時代のどのバンドよりもファンキーで、根性があり、はるかに脂ぎっていた。『Back to Oakland』（邦題『バック・トゥ・オークランド』）は、彼らの最強のアルバムではない。先を期待させる最初の2曲、「Oakland Stroke」（邦題「オークランド・ストローク」）と「Don’t Change Horses in the Middle of the Stream」（邦題「ドント・チェンジ・ホース」）のあとは、形のはっきりしないジャムに陥ったり、このバンドが陥りがちだった平凡なリリックに動きを封じられたりしている。ファンなら全体を通して力強いホーンセクションを味わうこともできるが、TOPをはじめて聴く人に最初の1枚としてはお勧めできない。むしろセカンド・アルバムの『イースト・ベイ・グリース』（原題『East Bay Grease』）のほうがいいだろう。（Tom Vickers, Amazon.com）

アメリカ西海岸のベイエリアシティ、オークランドが生んだ最高のファンクバンド、タワー・オブ・パワーのアルバムの中でも、フランシス・ロッコ・プレスティア(b)とデヴィッド・ガリバルディ(ds)の最強タッグは勿論のこと、オルガンのチェスター･トンプソン、ギターのブルース･コンテを含む最高のリズム隊を誇った時期の強力無比な代表作。バンドのテーマ曲ともなった"Oakland Stroke"の「管の炸裂」で幕が開き、レニー･ウィリアムズの力強くまた甘いヴォーカル、そして、伝説的名曲"Squib Cakes"での恐ろしくファンキー＆タイトなグルーヴに圧倒され、そして締めに再び"Oakland Stroke"...。この途方もなくファンクなバンドは今もって健在だ！

１曲目＝見事にキャンディーダルファーに似てる。そりゃーそうだ。こっちが本家だもの。現在病気で療養中のベース＝ロッコのベースプレーがさえる。ボーカリストもレニーウイリアムス＝ソロ作品あり＝で黒人のソウルフルなのどを存分に気かせる。

ドラムもかなりタイトでスィンギー。オルガンのチェスタートンプソンも味のあるプレーをしてる。曲がかなりいいので、最後までいっきに聴ける。バンドのコンビネーションがなんかかなり密でありますね。

良く使われる『ファンキー』という音楽用語の定義を教えてくれる数少ないバンド。現在でも元気にライブアルバムを出したりして現役で頑張っています。ブラスアレンジの整合感はほんとすごい。

アイズレーブラザース／ジェイムスブラウン／オハイオプレ??ヤーズ／アースウインド＆ファイヤー／アイザックへイズ／ジョージクリントン／パーラメント／スライ／ファンカデリック／キャンディーダルファー／アシッドジャズバンド／ブランドニューへビーズ／アベレージホワイトバンド／ジェイムステイラーカルテットなんかがお好きなかたにおすすめです。のりの良さが突き抜けていますね、このアルバムは

　ブラスをフィーチャーしたふるーいスタイルのファンクバンドである。70年代のまんまの音で今もやっている。ふつーのファンクバンドと違うのは、リズムアレンジだ。デビッド・ガリバルディとロッコという強力なリズム体を擁し、デビッド得意のリニア・フレージング（各パートの重なりが少なく、連続するフレーズ、ってわかんないな。例えばパラディドルで右手ハイハット、左手スネアなんてのが初歩のリニアフレーズ）でパターンが作られ、正確無比な２フィンガーがそれに乗っかるのである。このタイトなリズムとサックス重視のホーン、じゃきじゃきのギター、ローズとオルガンによってTOPの音は作られている。

　本アルバムはTOP全盛期の作品である。ベスト・ライブとどっちにしようか迷ったが、こっちにしてみた。70年代ファンクのにおいがぷんぷんのアルバムだ。２枚とも、多くのプロドラマーが必聴盤として挙げている。あなたがドラマー、またはベーシストであればさっそく２枚とも買って、ドラマーは「Squib Cakes」を、ベーシストはベスト・ライブの「What Is Hip？」をコピーしよう。一般人には、最近のライブである「Soul Vaccination」も音がクリアで聞き易くお勧めだ。

　でも、生がいいよ。CDも大きな音で聞こう。
