JTことJames Taylorの２枚目、否３枚目のアルバム。"Sweet Babay James"で人気絶頂の頃のリリースだった。キャロル・キングとのデュエット有名曲"You've Got A Friend"を含む充実した作品集。Singer-Song-Writerブームの真っ盛りの頃だった。２枚目と比べるとぐっと落ち着いた雰囲気で、タイトル曲なんて特にレイドバックしていて脳天気さが素敵。お百姓さんになった自分を"Mud Slide Slim"と呼ぶのも洒落ている。一曲目から幸せに満ち足りたジェームスがいるよね。恋人との生活を謳歌するその明るさがとっても魅力的だった。そんな中に"Hey Mister That's Me Upon The Jukebox"なんて"Fire and Rain"を彷彿とさせるシリアスな曲も入っていて抜かりがない。家族を呼んで録音した"Highway Song"ホワイトゴスペルで忘れられないな。反戦ムードを湛えた曲がヴェトナム戦争の傷跡を甦らせるところもある。その辺はやはり時代を感じさせる。ジョニ・ミッチェルとのデュエット"Long Ago And Far Away"も美しい。キャロルの"So Far Away"への当てつけだったのかな。
伊達男ぶりが眩しいＬＰジャケットもいかしてた。 中学生だった僕には良い英語の教材でした。あ〜もうあれから３０年か、時の経つのは早いか遅いのか、自分にはまだよく分からない。ただもうあの頃は二度と戻ってこないことは確かだ。未だによく聴くリラックスした雰囲気が好きなアルバムだ。

１９７１年の作品でジェイムス・テイラーのアルバムの中では最高のセールスを記録した。ジェイムス・テイラーは、いわゆる「シンガー・ソング・ライター」の草分け的存在で、日本にも大きな影響を与えていると思う。彼は、毎日の生活を歌にあらわし、友情や故郷への思い、恋人と過ごしている楽しい気持ち、噂話などが題材となっている。こういった日常会話を歌にしたような音楽は、当時日本でも盛んに作られた。喧騒の時代から、自らの足元を見つめなおすような気分が時代を覆っていたように思う。それを表現して、多くの人の支持を得たのがこの作品である。2は、キャロル・キングの曲だが、ジェイムス・テーラーの歌で全米ＮＯ．１。この作品全体を象徴するような曲である。

心配事や嫌な事があっても、James Taylorの曲を聴くと和みますね。どの曲もそれぞれ好きなのですが、いくつか特にお気に入りの曲について書きたいと思います。

Carole Kingの曲をカバーしてNo. 1ヒットとなった"You've Got a Friend"はいつ聴いても泣き崩れそうになります。なんて美しい曲なのでしょう。元気の無い友達に、この歌詞を書いたカードを送ったことがあるのですが、本当に喜ばれました。カラオケでもいつも歌うのですが、Jamieはとても淡々と歌っていて簡単そうに聞こえるけど実は！すごく難しいのだった。

そして"Places in My Past"！美しい！！！過ぎ去った昔を懐かしんで優しく歌うJamieに涙！

"Hey Mister..."では"Fire and Rain"のヒットにより一躍時代の寵児となった彼の心情を歌っています。お金を入れてくれればいつでも悲しい歌を歌いますよ、とジュークボックスから自分の意思とは関係なしに鳴り響く自分の歌のことを歌っています。彼は自分の楽しみのために始めた音楽なのに、こんな風になるとは思っていなかった、と今の成功を語っていたので、戸惑いも少なからずあったのでしょう。

"You Can Close Your Eyes"は当時の恋人だったJoni Mitchellのために作った曲だそうです。彼女はこのアルバムの何曲かにコーラスで参加しています（"You've Got a Friend"にも）。もう悲しいbluesは歌えないよ、と恋する幸せな気持ちを控えめに表現しています。ピックを使わずに弾いているギターの音色がとても優しい。

"Long Ago and Far Away"もとても美しく彼の曲の中でもとっても好きなお気に入りの曲です。確かシングル･カットされたはずです。この曲もJoniが参加しています。二人の声はとてもよく合っています。

前作の"Sweet Baby James"のジャケットの写真と比べると、このアルバムのジャケットの幸せそうな照れくさそうな笑顔は印象的です。そのまま彼の精神状態を表しているように思うのです。以後、アルバムごとにどんどんたくましく、幸せになっていく彼を見るのはファンとしてとても嬉しいことです。私がファンになったのはこのアルバムの遥か後、"Dad Loves His Work"なのですが！
