By 1975 Young had written some of the most enduring anthems in rock history. But from the slow, tension-building piano opening of "Tonight's the Night," he downshifts into darkness and Crazy Horse's folk-country melodies take on a guttural hum that would eventually speak to generations of punk and grunge musicians. Inspired by the overdose deaths of two of Young's friends, roadie Bruce Berry and guitarist Danny Whitten, the title track (and its closing reprise) is a hypnotic cry of "why?" Even the relative party songs, "Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown" and "Roll Another Number," fit the album's bus-to-nowhere resignation. --Steve Knopper

　このレビュアーはどうかしている。このアルバムは他のカスタマーの方も記している通り、紛れもないニールの「最高傑作」である。「彼の最高傑作ではない」のなら、このアルバムを凌ぐアルバムはどれだというのだろう？　挙げている曲まで少々ピントが外れている。この有名な"テキーラ・セッション"では、ファンの意見は表題曲が最高だという意見と、"Mellow My Mind"が超絶だという意見があるが、個人的には後者を採りたい。もちろんどちらが上などという議論はまったく無意味である。ニールの最高傑作のみならず、ロック史上に残る名作であることは疑いもない。ギターが乱れている、高音が潰れている、それがどうだというのだ。感情移入が過剰な演奏は大概失敗するが、「音楽」として成立した稀有な場合に限り、通常の演奏では達成しえない高みへ上ることができる。ニールにとってもこのセッションを凌ぐ演奏をものすることは二度と不可能だっただろう。そういう意味では、「一回性」という意味で、ベンヤミンのいう「アウラ」を強烈に放っているセッションであると言えるだろう。

　ニール・ヤングほどその時代の空気に反応しながら、自分の心のおもむくままに音楽を作り続けている人も稀でしょう。その作品の中でも本作は、とりわけ極私的・異色な作品だ。というのも、このレコードが作られるきっかけとなったのが、２人の友人のドラッグ死。本作はその２人に捧げられている。録音スタジオでは、メンバー全員がテキーラでへべれけに酔っぱらいながらの録音だったという。それだけにニール・ヤングの声が"重く"伝わってくる。夜中に暗闇の中で１人で酒を飲みながら、じっくりと向き合いながら聞きたいアルバムだ。

オリジナルスタジオアルバムで最も人気のあるのが本作。ドラッグで失った二人の友人のミュージシャンに捧げるアルバムとして曰くつきであり、また、ニールヤングが離婚した事についても歌われていて驚くほどパーソナルな作品と言える。
ただ、そういった話をしらずとも、このアルバムから溢れる悲壮感や絶望感、そしてそこから前へとどうにか進もうという歌が堪らなく良い。歌詞も切実な想いが痛烈で、なんとも堪らない。サウンド面では少々ひねった作りが目立つが、それを感じさせない一貫性は流石である。相変わらずのニールヤングのギターも素晴らしく冴えている。ハーヴェストやアフターザゴールドラッシュのような定番を聴いたら、次はこれだろう。

初期のニールの最高傑作。シンプルなサウンド。全体的に暗め。切なくなるようなアルバムです。「after the gold rush」と共に絶対お薦め。
