   1970年に発表されたジェイムス・テイラーの2ndアルバムは、<7>のヒットをきっかけに彼をスターダムにのしあげたばかりではなく、それまで注目されることのなかったシンガーソングライターという存在そのものをアピールすることになった。メッセージ性がなくとも個人の生活光景や内面の描写に優れ、音楽的に高度であるならば、聴く者はそれを表現に値するものとして評価したのだ。
   個人の心象から切り取られる彼の光景の背後には、必ずHYMN（聖歌）的な救済があり、福音の光がある。それは暗闇から明るい場所へ出ていくイメージであり、あるいは長い夜が明けて朝へ向かう心の動きだ。ややもすると甘くなる表現を、彼はバランスの取れた知性で抑えている。

もともと騒がしめの音楽が好きな私が気に入ってよく聞く意外な作品がこれです。本当にいいんですよ。当時、ディープ・パープルとジェームス・テーラーを交互に聞いていたという思い出があります。特に、「スウィート・ベイビー・ジェイムス」「ファイアー・アンド・レイン」が秀逸。さらに「スティーム・ローラー・ブルース」が意外な雰囲気で盛り上げてくれます。「おおスザンナ」なんかもう牧歌的雰囲気で、意外な方面からのアプローチで私のお気に入りになってしまいました。皆さんにお薦めです。

このアルバムを聴くとジェイムスと旅をしているような気分になる・・・カントリー・ロードを歩きながら。このアルバムからは「スウィート・ベイビー・ジェイムス」「カントリーロード」「ファイア・アンド・レイン」「スチームローラー」など名曲が生まれた。若きジェイムスの心の旅をヴァーチャル体験できる・・・シンプルさの中に際立ったエレメントの輝きを感じるアルバムです。今も声が変っていないのが凄い！

少年の頃、「いい人間になりたい」と思っていました。

ところが大人になってもまだ「いい人間」にはなれないで、ふと、悩むときがございます。ホント、悩んでいます。

誠実で、思いやりがあり、自然を大切にする。そんな人間になりたかったです。

でも、現実は世界のどこかで、人種差別、戦争、自然破壊などがあり、それを止められないダメな自分がいます。どこかで苦しんでいる人々がいるというのに・・・。中学時代、ジェームス・テイラーの『スウィート・ベイビー・ジェームス』を聴きながら友人と「シブイなぁ」などと話していたっけ。世界の出来事に少しずつ興味を持ちはじめた頃でした。

彼の歌を聴くと、少年の頃を思い出します。そして、今でも考えさせられます。

私にとって、音楽を聴いたり映画を見るのは、きっと「いい人間」になるためだろう、と思い始めています。

そして、映画『旅立ちの時』（監督/シドニー・ルメット）の挿入歌にもなった『ファイア・アンド・レイン』を聴くと、昔を思い出し「よし、がんばろう」と思うのです。

「自分探し」の歌。名曲です。

ちょっと、ナイーブ過ぎるかな。

そんなことを考えながらジェームス・テイラーを聴いています。
