Fountains of Wayne is one of the leaders of the latest in a long series of power- pop revivals. If the music sounds a lot like mid-1960s pop rock, it's no accident, for the songwriters are unabashed Mersey-beat fans. The songs on the debut album, Fountains of Wayne, take perky, '60s-like hooks and marry them to ambiguous, unnerving, '90s-like lyrics. Some songs offer an untrustworthy narrator; when the singer complains about "Joe Rey", a Eurotrash jet-setter, you wonder whether he's expressing disdain or envy and whether the song's noisy guitar energy belongs to the band or to Joe Rey. And there's something about the pent-up Mersey-beat energy and pleading vocals of "Please Don't Rock Me Tonight" that make one suspect the singer doesn't really mean what he says. ファウンテインズ・オブ・ウェインがアルバム『Fountains of Wayne』でデビューしたのは96年。
私がFOWを好きになったきっかけである曲が、2曲目の『Sink to the Bottom』
これを聴いた時に、凄くビックリしました。
めったにUS系をチェックしなかった私は、USにもこんなバンド居るんだー。と、感心しました。
即効アルバムを購入。

甘くセツナイメロディーと溢れんばかりの疾走感。
どの曲をとっても、ほんっと素晴らしくて、何度聴き返しても飽きの来ないサウンドに脱帽です！
じっくり聴いてもらいたいアルバムです。
とにかく絶品のメロディーに付け足し過ぎない色々な隠し味が良いです。
コーラスもだし、バックの音も。

FOWの曲は2ndでもそうなんですけど、聴いた後になんだか幸せになれる。
そんな暖かさのある音楽です。
特にお薦めは2曲目の『Sink to the Bottom』、アップテンポでノリの良い5曲目の『Survival Car』
あとは、浮遊感のあるサウンドの4曲目『She's Got a Problem』、ちょっとセツナイ7曲目『Sick Day』
など、1度聴くと病み付きになるサウンドで、かなりのオススメです！

これを聴いた時に、凄くビックリしました。

このFountains of Wayneのデビューアルバム、「Fountains of Wayne」は現在、このジャケットではありません。まるっきり同じ写真を「フラミンゴズ」というバンドが先にジャケットに採用していたため、現在はバスドラムが被写体のジャケットが流通しています。
　内容自体はまるっきり違いはありませんが、もし経済的に余裕のある方は2枚所有するのが良いでしょう。
　曲については他のレヴュアーがお書きの通り、秀逸で極上なポップです。ビートルズフォロワーでありながら、実に一直線にアメリカンポップをひた走る感じがたまらなく心地よいです。
2曲目のSink To The Bottomでは、平凡な日常に、あえてスポットを当て、皮肉で、斜めで、ひねくれた、それでいてカッコつけず、自分がダメ男な部分を露骨に曲にしています。
　このアルバムが出た当時、ウィーザーがファースト(ブルーアルバム)をリリースし話題になり始めた頃だったので、ポストウィーザーみたいな紹介をされていましたが、それから10年が経つ今では、ウィーザーとは随分遠い路線を行っています。
　ストレートなビートに、素直なメロディーライン。
やきそばにマヨネーズをかけない。豆腐には醤油のみ。ピラフにレーズンは入れない。サラダの中のパイナップルやりんごはできれば遠慮したい。なぁんて貴方にはぴったりのストレートさです。
ビートルズが90年代に活動を続けていたら、きっとこんなアルバムを作っただろう音源に溢れている、20世紀最高の良質ポップアルバムです。
