Duke saw Genesis start, somewhat unwillingly, to shed their progressive-rock mantle. Partly this was a response to the radically changing musical scene, partly a result of Phil Collins's new-found influence within the band as a songwriter, and partly it was a logical direction if they were to capitalize upon the success of "Follow You Follow Me" from 1978's And Then There Were Three. Recorded at Abba's Polar Studios in Stockholm, Duke showcased a more commercial sound, brisker arrangements, and more down-to-earth (some would say merely more prosaic) lyrics. Though Tony Banks was still responsible for the majority of the songwriting, turning in the classic "Duchess" and "Heathaze," the album also contains Collins's first two solo compositions, including "Misunderstanding," a template for the songs of his forthcoming solo career. In contrast to the relatively muddy-sounding And Then There Were Three, Duke is clear and sharp, with Collins's increasingly arena-friendly drum sound showcased in the mix. --James Swift

おそらくジェネシスのアルバムの中でも、トータルコンセプトとして高い完成度を放ち、かつヒット性も意識した傑作といえばこの「Duke」をおいて他には見当たらないだろう。
スマッシュヒットシングルでもあり、ライブを締めくくる定番曲でもあった「ターン イット オン アゲイン」やフィルの初ヒットシングルである「ミスアンダースタンディング」などの有名どころはもちろん、隠れた名曲が多いのもこのアルバムの特徴。
マイクの「マン オブ アワー タイムズ」や「アローン トゥナイト」、トニーの「ヒートヘイズ」など、地味だが味わい深い佳曲である。
冒頭の三部構成の組曲から始まり、ラストにタイトルに冠したインスト曲をこれまた組曲形式で持ってくるところなど、いかにもプログレッシブロックらしい様式美で構築されており、完成度の高さという点では実に隙のない好アルバムである。
このアルバムを境にして、フィルが名実ともにジェネシスのイニシアティブを握っていくことになるのだが、「Duke」はメンバー各々の個性や持ち味を民主的にバランスよく取り入れることが出来た最後の、そして最高の傑作と言えるのではないだろうか。

前作「そして、３人が残った」で、ポップ的アプローチがみられ、また、ジャケットも漫画タッチなので、聴く前は「完全ポップか？」と思わせるが、１曲目の「ビハインド・ザ・ラインズ」のオーケストレーションを聞かせた派手なキーボードのコード・ワークで、前作よりプログレ的に戻ったことがうかがわせる。

その後も３曲目までは切れ目なく曲が続き、４曲目の「マン・オブ・ザ・タイムス」では、ヘビーで重厚なサウンドが聞ける。途中、次回作の「アバカブ」にも繋がる軽快ポップ曲「ターン・イット・アゲイン」が入るが、この曲もポップながら13/8拍子という奇抜なリズムが刻まれ、非凡さが伺われる。

後半は「アローン・トゥナイト」「プリーズ・ドント・アスク」というフィルのボーカルが胸に染みるバラード曲があり「プログレ色は尻切れトンボか？」と思わせるが、その次の「デュークス・トラベル」は、雰囲気たっぷりでフィルのドラムさばきも楽しめるロング・インスト曲を経て、ラストの「デュークス・エンド」へと複雑な展開の曲が一気に突っ走り、アルバムは大団円を迎える。
このアルバムを最後に、ピーター・ガブリエル無き後のジェネシス・サウンドをつくりあげてきたプロデューサーのデヴィッド・ヘンツェルが去り、次回作「アバカブ」からジェネシスはポップ・バンドへと変化する。
それだけにこのアルバムはとても印象に残る名作と思われる。

前作「そして三人が残った」収録のヒットシングル「フォローユーフォローミー」の成功で、ジェネシスは新たに女子高生やキッズなど分かりやすい音楽が好きな購買層の支持を得ることに成功した。そして本作では、前作で獲得したこの支持層に受け入れられるように非常にポップで、聞きやすく、流行の音楽スタイルを取り入れた楽曲が製作された。トニーもこれまでの彼の曲と比較するとかなりポップな曲を提供しているが、まるでビージーズのようなコーラスを導入したフィルコリンズの２曲の単独作「誤解」「プリーズドントアスク」はヒットソングの模範といえるほどよくできた切ないポップソングだと思う。特に「誤解」は初の全米トップ２０ヒットを記録し、８０年代のアメリカンマーケット制覇の足がかりをつかんだ。マイクの楽曲は「スモールクリープスデイ」の世界そのままだ。本作は３人の共作曲が非常に充実していて、ライブ映えしそうな楽曲、というかライブで演奏することを前提に製作されたような楽曲が多数収録されている。特に「デュークトラベルズ」については「スリーサイズライブ」になぜ収録されないの？と思うくらいライブトラックが生き生きしている。ジャケットのデザインも小学生から主婦層にまで支持されそうな可愛らしい内容で、ピーガブ時代の若い男向けのジェネシスからあらゆる階層の市民権を得たジェネシスに変貌したことを物語っている。このヒットを受けてフィルコリンズの自信と才能が開花し、「夜の囁き」のヒットにつながっていった。
