30年間も聞いているので、実は自分でも何が私の結論か分かりません。

ピーターガブリエルのエゴ大爆発と言う意見に「確かに・・」
別に2枚する必要なかったんじゃない。冗長だ。「確かに・・」
これはロックンロールだ。でもこれが僕は好きなんだ。とガブリエルは最後の曲で言っている。「そうなんだ。そうだろうな・・」
いい曲も多いよ。「そうそう・・」

そんなに良く聞くアルバムではないですが、大好きなアルバムです。
GENESIS聞いたこと無い人は3枚目位に買うとイイと思います。
とか言ってホントは最初に買って欲しい。でもそれでスグ嫌われても・・・というのも本心。

PS.
私は「Anyway」が好きです。
八方ふさがりのとき聞きます。いい言葉です。

まずジャケット。これまでの「Foxtrot」や「月影の騎士」等のファンタジックな絵とは違うヒプノシスのリアルなアートワークに目を奪われます。そして中のサウンドもファンタジックな前作とは対照的にソリッドで緊張感が張りめぐっています。そしてガブリエルの歌詞もファンタジー路線から、現実を直視したシュールなものに変わっています。
この作品がピーガブ期の作品としては最後になってしまいましたが、その完成度は疑うべくもなく、今までの作品の集大成となっています。曲は基本的に全曲つながっているものの、あまりまとまりがなく、流れを意図的に断ち切りながら進んでいくような感じさえします。すると私たちリスナーは不思議と迷宮に迷い込んだような感覚になってきます。この「感覚」を気に入るか、気に入らないかでこのアルバムへの評価が決まるような気がします。私自身はすっかりはまってしまい、今では「Foxtrot」とともにヘビー・ローテーションが続いてます。
ちなみに、この感覚を気に入った人は歌詞もじっくり読んでみて下さい。ますます迷宮に入れることうけあいです(笑)。

ミュージカル・演劇を想像させるイマジネーション溢れる音世界が素晴らしい。ガブリエル在籍時最後の、そして最高のアルバム。まずは、その音に浸ってみて欲しい。
そしてThe Lamia。これが個人的にはこのアルバムで、そしてガブリエル時代で最も美しい楽曲と思っている。

ガブリエル独特の影の有る歌声、バンクスの美しいキーボード、そして曲のエンディングのハケットの素晴らしいギターソロとガブリエルのフルート、それを支えるフィルの繊細で表現豊かなドラムス。フィルがリードボーカルを担当してからも傑作は数多く生まれたが、このアルバムはガブリエルによって創造された芸術と思う。
