Often overshadowed by its immediate successor--The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway--this 1974 album features Genesis concert favorites such as the baroque "Firth of Fifth" and the epic "Cinema Show." It yields the group's first British hit, "I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)." Singer Peter Gabriel's heady mixture of dark drama and cryptic commentary is tied to some of the band's most stunning arrangements: Steve Hackett's violin-like guitar melodies on "Firth of Fifth," Tony Banks's synth arpeggios on "The Battle of Epping Forest," and crisp, tight drumming throughout from Phil Collins. Collins makes his Genesis lead vocal debut on the acoustic "More Fool Me." The complex structures and poetic risks taken here may throw fans of later Genesis hits such as the cute "Abacab," but it's well worth coming along for the ride. --James Rotondi

このレビューに↑のようなタイトルを付けたのは、
「Foxtrot」（人によっては「Nursery Cryme」）から
「静寂の嵐」までの作品は全て紛うことなく傑作であるからです。
すなわち、ジェネシスにはイエスでいう「危機」みたいな、
誰もが納得して一つと決まるような、『最高傑作』は存在しません。

さて、この作品ですが、前々作や前作に比べて、

ピーターガブリエルが占める割合が減ったように感ぜられます。
しかし、そうはいっても「The Battle Of Epping Forest」では
例のピーター節が炸裂してますし、オープニングの「月影の騎士」及び
ラストの「Aisle Of Plenty」では健在ぶりを示しています。
（「Cinema Show」から「Aisle~」でハッとさせられるんですよ）

また、一方ではメンバーの演奏技術が一段と向上しています。
「月影の騎士」中間部におけるスティーブハケットやフィルコリンズのプレイ、
そして「Cinema Show」後半のインスト部の、特にトニーバンクスのプレイは
凝った工夫に満ちていて、素晴らしいものがあります。
もちろんマイクラザフォードも全編にわたり活躍してます。

そして、なんといっても（これはジェネシスの作品全般に言えることですが）
魅力なのはドラマティックかつメロディアスな曲の数々。
「Firth Of Fifth」や「After The Ordeal」は感動ものです。
シングルヒットした「I Know What I Like」も癖になる名曲でしょう。

「シネマ・ショー」は約１１分の曲だが、この中に多くのエッセンスが凝縮されている。
ラザフォードのギターの美しさに魅了され、ガブリエルの甘美な歌に酔ったかと思うと、
多彩なキーボードプレイが織り込まれ、後半はシンフォニックな印象になっている。
シネマ・ショーはジェネシスの一つの頂点を示していると言える。

アルバムには、不思議な統一感がある。
一つの理由は、印象的な短いパッセージが所々に顔を出し、全体を引き締めている。
また、シンフォニックな雰囲気が目立つのと、ややポップになっている感がある。

後にヒットメーカーとなる、サビを中心とした明るい曲が特徴のコリンズ節も垣間見る。
特に２曲目と３曲目にそれを感じる。

印象として、ガブリエルからコリンズに、バトンを渡しつつあるアルバムであり、
その両方の魅力を堪能出来る。

アルバム全体としての、完成度の高い作品だ。

『Foxtrot』での大作主義から脱却。より個々の曲をロマンティックに仕上げ物語性が増したのが本作。一曲目の『Dancing With The Moonlit Knight』から美しいの一言である。おそらく女性のファンは本作をジェネシスで一番好きなアルバムにあげるのではないかと思う。

僕の人生の座右の銘『I know what I like and I like what I know』はこのアルバムの二曲目『I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)』の歌詞から頂いたものであります。
