But it wasn't until the anthemic "Le Freak" hit the charts that the New York four-piece really took centre stage on the disco dance-floor. Included here, C'est Chic epitomises their genre-defining sound which owed as much to funk, soul and electro as to disco. "I Want Your Love" is an infectious party groover, "At Last I Am Free" is a reflective, emotive number, while "Savoir Faire" is a seductive soundtrack of saxophone and strings. 大御所シックの音は、このアルバム、
そして次作の「リスキー」に集約されるんじゃないですか？
ベースとギターの絡みはもちろん、
ノリのいいドラムが聞かせ所を作ります。
当時大ヒットの「le freak」は
同フレーズの繰り返しがすこし気になるものの、
リズムに合わせて踊ればこれが逆にゴキゲン！
これもヒット要因の要ですからネ。
そして「I Want Your Love」いいですねぇ。
そしてそして、ヒットこそしませんでしたが、
「Sometimes You Win」です。おすすめです。
当時のディスコサウンドは、メロディがホントキレイ。
シックの音は様々なカバーがされているように、
永遠に聞きつがれていくことでしょう。

CHICのC'est CHICのレコードを買ったのは２０年も前のことかな？C'est CHICとはフランス語で「格好いい！」とか、当時の「決まっているね！」というような意味。友人に薦められて買ったのだったか。
今度、CDになって私の目の前に現れた”C'est CHIC"は、粋なテンポのよいリズムで、相変わらずオシャレな感じ！女性２人、男性3人の黒人ボーカルグループで８曲入っています。グループ名、アルバムタイトルはフランス語ですが、ニューヨークのグループとのこと。1978年リリースのアルバムです。スタイリッシュなソウルの感覚を満喫できます。今聞いてみても懐かしさとともに充分新しいと思えます。鏡の前でスタイルをとって踊ってみたくなるような曲もあり、スローなバラードもあります。１曲目、chic cheer、２曲目le freakはアップテンポなソウル、でカッコイイ！3曲目のsavoir faireはとっても美しいインストゥルメンタル、etc.です。難を言えば、今のソウルに比べて少しメロディが単純かなという感じもしますが、それでもスタイリッシュな魅力は感じられるでしょう。なんとなく、お洒落して外車に乗りたくなってしまいました。

既に当初メンバーの2人が他界、残るはN.ROGERSだけが何とか気を吐いているCHIC。大出世作が本作、セカンド（なのかな？）。とにかく当時のディスコでは引っ張りダコだったそう。私の体験は大学の頃に発売後10年ほど経ってから。かのDURAN DURANが直接的に影響を受けたバンド、オシャレなフリして結構ゴリゴリのファンクをやっているらしいという情報は入手していたのですが、接してみてビックリ！
ちょうどクロいフィールドにハマっていた頃だったので、このヘンなゴリゴリファンク、しかもポップな音作りになっているのにすっかりハマってしまったのでした。
その後3人それぞれが大活躍し、シーンの中心に躍り出て'80年代のポップスシーンを正に支えていた事実のとおり、この3人でなければ実現できなかったバンド、グルーヴなんだと思います。
何だかアクセントがヘンで特徴的なドラム、当時からすれば全く異端なブリブリ、かつ単独でメロディーを奏でているベース、そしてセンシティヴながらパキパキ音のポリエステルかなんかでできたストラトでのカッティング、もう独特の世界を展開していますが、これがまた3人揃うとそんなに違和感はないのです。
当時の3人の音合わせの現場に居合わせたかった、カラダを預けたかったと思わせるノリです。
ゴリゴリ、コテコテのファンクチューンから、綺麗なバラードまで、バラエティに富みながら全く散漫な印象はありません。
パーティーが終わった後のようなオシャレなジャケットなのにこの音、このギャップ！魅力的です。
一時ムーヴメントにもなった伝説的なバンド、女性コーラスのアイディア、オーケストラを大胆に導入するのはP-FUNKの影響もあるのかもしれませんが、親しみやすく仕立てたのはアイディアの勝利なのでしょう。
楽器をやる方にはグルーヴ、ノリを追求するには避けて通れないバンドですし、そうでない方にもヘンなノリなのになぜかポップなファンクですので、楽しく聴けるのではないでしょうか。
今となっては時代といえば時代の音かもしれませんが、ブラックミュージックに一石を投じ、'80年代ポップスにも大きく影響を与えたクリエイター達のアイディアが満載された作品、私はこの20年すっかりクセになって未だによく聴いています。クルマのトレイの中には必ず入っている一枚です！
