   60年代の後半に興ったウエスト・コースト・ロックの代表的な存在にして、70年代以降のロック・バンドに多大な影響を与えたバッファロー・スプリング・フィールドは、スティヴン・スティルス、リッチー・フューレル、ニール・ヤングという、アメリカのロック・ヒストリーに名を残す偉大なソングライター3人を擁した伝説のバンド。本作は、彼らの才能と豊かな音楽性がもっとも良い形で表現された作品だ。
   カントリー、フォーク、ブルースといったアメリカン・ロックのルーツを正統的に受け継ぐ音楽性を基本にしながらも、ジャズ、ソウル、R&B、南米民族音楽、クラシックなどのファクターを巧みに取り入れたサウンドは、まさにタイムレスな刺激を聴く者に与えてくれる。20世紀前半の現代音楽にも通じる実験的なアレンジ・ワークをオーソドックスなバンド・アンサンブルに融合させるなど、前衛的な試みも随所に見られる本作は、発表当時はまったく理解されず、セールス的にも低迷したという。まさに、「早すぎた傑作」と言えるだろう。特に<1>（N・ヤング）、<9>（S・スティルス）は、永遠の名曲だ。（森 朋之）

３人のソングライターの持ち味はバラバラなんだけど、奇跡的に調和が取れた刹那、世にも美しい作品が偶然生まれた。…そんな感じ。
1st、3rdの雑多な印象と比べると別のバンドかと思えるくらいスゴい。やっぱ偶然の産物だったのかな…。
曲順が神。

ウェストコースト・ロックの元祖と言われることもあるバッファローだが、このアルバムには軽快なロックンロール以外にもドリーミーなアレンジを施したメロディアスなポップ・チューンが多数収録されている。聴き手は、音楽そのものに柔らかく包まれるような錯覚を抱くだろう。レッド・ゼペリンのアコースティックな部分はバッファローからの影響が大とも言われるが、そんなロック史的知識を抜きにしても充分楽しめるし、聴くべきアルバムである。ジャケットも秀逸。

　ニール・ヤング以外は今となっては現役のビッグ・ネームはいないが、昔はスーパー・グループ扱いだった。しかしこの音楽のインパクトは、60年代後半のアメリカ、ウエスト・コースト（特にサンフランシスコとか）にいた者にこそ伝わるのだと思う。要するにCultureの1シーンなのだ。FENのラジオではいまだに時々かかってるし。

　ただ純粋に音として聞いても、アコースティック・サウンドと多彩なテイストを持ったこのアメリカン・ロックは2002年の今では再びかっこいい音なのでは。
