これを書く時点で30歳台以上くらいの人でないと，ほとんど知らないのかもしれないPhil Collinsのデビュー作．こんなレビューを不運にもみたならば，是非一度聴いてほしいと思う．

このソロについて，彼はThe Beatlesからの影響を公言している．それはポップさという点だけではなく，インド方面のオリエンタルな音楽の要素の導入においてもうかがえる．Genesisのメンバーということで，彼の立ち位置をプログレとみるならば，彼のキャリアを知っていたリスナーにとって，これらのチャレンジは一種の違和感を与えた．でも，そんなものを取り除けば，この作品は彼のパーソナリティーが存分に盛り込まれた，とてもヒューマンなものだということに気づくはずだ．Stephen Bishopとの共演である"This must be love"のつくりだすほんわかした雰囲気．そこには，「漢」ではない，優しい彼の恋愛観が反映されているだろう．"If leaving me is easy"の切なさには，あんな顔した彼の恋愛経験が含まれているに違いない．インナースリーブには，彼の家族や仲間の写ったにこやかなポラロイド写真がこれでもかと入っている．そういうメンタリティでつくった作品なわけなので，他人の幸せが面白くない人には勧められない．

本作の"In the air tonight"(「マイアミ・バイス」の挿入曲としてさんざん聴いた)で聴けるドラムスの「ゲートエコー」は，彼とHugh Padghamがつくりだし，80年代のドラム音では流行りに流行った(Power Station, Hall & Oates, 吉川晃司などなど)．いまや聞かれることはないけれど，彼は音づくりで色々なことを試みていた．そういうのが気になる方は，"No jacket required"あたりまでの作品にあるクレジットをみてみると興味深く感じるでしょう．Phil Collinsの作品には，そういう面での面白さもある．

5.0 out of 5 stars 『あのフィル・コリ』のみずみずしいソロデビュー作, 2002/10/26
世界的ヒット・メイカーとなるその後の『原石』たるこの作品、80年代全盛期のギラギラした、油っこいまでのポップさは希薄。

当時のジェネシス部外活動、「ブランドX」でのフュージョンのテイスト、彼個人の趣味を感じさせるR&Bのテイストなどが、見事に溶け合ったみずみずしい傑作。実に爽やか！

「夏の明け方を思わせる...」なんて、その後のソロ人気全盛時代のフィルからは考えられない世界ですが、本当です。
晴れやかで、『スカッとした』彼のドラムが、たまらなく気持ちイイ！！

アダルトポップシンガーメガヒット可能。高性能ヒットマシーン。クリエイティブな面ではやはりこのアルバムがピーク。バラエティーに富む楽曲。ソリッドなアレンジ、どれもすばらしい。皮肉なことにこのアルバム以降は低迷期なのだ。（ノージャケットリクワイアードは除外）
