   ハービー・マンは当初テナー・サックスを吹いていたが、1952年にマット・マシューズがフルート奏者を探していると聞いて、さっそく猛練習を積んでフルートをマスター、マシューズの録音に採用された。競争相手の少ない楽器のほうが出番は多いと考え、フルートにスイッチしたのだとか。
   60年代のマンはブラジル音楽、アフリカ音楽、レゲエ、ディスコ・サウンドと、さまざまな音楽に関心を示したが、本人いわく「ナッシング・イズ・フォーエヴァー。永遠のものなんてなにもない。イタリア料理、フランス料理、ブラジル料理、みんなおいしいけれど、明日はまた別の料理を食べたくなるかもしれない」のだそうだ。
   68年録音の本作は、いわゆるジャズ・ロック的な色彩の強い作品。ソニー・シャーロック&ラリー・コリエルというジャズ・ロックを代表するギタリストをフィーチャー、サム&テイヴの<3>(この曲ではミロスラフ・ヴィトウスがフェンダー・ベースを弾いている)やアレサ・フランクリンの<4>など、当時のヒット曲をソウルフルに演奏している。（市川正二）

今から３０年前、高校の帰り、駅前のビルのＢＦ１にあったジャズ喫茶「ニューポート」にたむろしていた時、いつもかかっていたレコードがこれ、ハービーマンでした。全く予備知識はありませんでしたが毎日、毎月、聞いているうちに、しっかり体にしみこんでいました。あれから３０年、今日何気なくパソコンの検索バーに打ち込んだキワードが「ハービーマン」。ネットサーフィンの中出てきたのが「MemphisUnderground 」。懐かしくて々思わず、迷わず買ってしまいました。届くのが待遠しいです。

正統派ジャズ・ファンからは、小馬鹿にされているハービー・マンだが、このアルバムは格好いい。普段全くジャズを聴かない、うちの父が、「お前、ハービー・マンは持っていないのか？」と尋ねて来たのが、このアルバムに手を出すきっかけだった。父に感謝。ラリー・コリエルと、ソニー・シャーロックのツイン・ギターは、まぁ、はっきり言ってジャズではないが、そんな事はどうでもいい。アレサ・フランクリンの4、アイザック・ヘイズの3など、完全に指向としてはソウルの方を向いている。そういえば、レーベルはソウルの殿堂、アトランティックだった。ファンクにフルートは意外によく使われるが、そのさきがけは、このアルバムだったのかも。今の時代にもフィットするであろう、ファンク名盤。

大学生時代に京王線沿線に住んでいた頃、近所のちっぽけなＣＤショップでジャケ買いしたのがこのＣＤだった。フルートを中心にインストのみで構成された楽曲は、ゆるく、心地よい。その楽曲が生み出す「ゆるい」空間は、友人との会話を誘い、酒を美味くし、女性の心を自然の内に開かせる。そんな主張するのではなく、柔らかく空間を包み込む「ゆるさ」に星５つを与えたいと思う。
