Signed to a major label and sweeping into the US Top Ten with their first single (the overplayed "Semi-Charmed Life"), this Bay Area band were ripe targets for those snipers in the alternative rock world who complain about bands not paying their dues. The truth is that 1) 3EB (as their merchandise proclaims them) probably never imagined a hit of that size and 2) it's not one of the best songs on their debut album. Their melange of Smashing Pumpkins, The Edge-style guitar and collegiate hip-hop yields much better results with the piercing tones of "Graduate" and the lyrical playing style evident in most of their songs. Far from being just hype, 3EB have actually produced a better-than-average record for the American alternative rock market with very few weak moments. --Tim Perry

今でも忘れられない作品です。
tr13のMOTORCYCLE　DRIVE　BYはもう何度聴いたのだろう？
この曲に救われ、私は前を向いて歩き出す事ができた。
些細な事で躓き、悩み、うまくいかない日常に苛立ち。
自分に自信を無くしてしまいそうになったらぜひ聴いてください。

とにかく歌詞とメロディーが渾身になってその曲で表現したい事を訴えてきます。
このバンドの曲でいつも感じるのは,歌詞がその曲を必要として、その曲が歌詞を必要として、曲としてあるのに必然だと感じる事
静かなイントロで語りかけ、ヘビーなメロディーで訴えてくる。
歌詞はすごくヘビーな事なのに、聞き手の心に語りかけてきます。
ぜひ国内版で歌詞を知って下さい。

私は10年たった今でも歌詞に共感してしまいます。口に出せない悩み、自分の弱さ、社会に適合できない苛立ち、自分は何処に向かってるのか。
手応えなんか求めちゃいないけど　心のどこかで救われたいって願ってる。
痛いくらいに赤裸々に自分の弱さに訴え、でも自分は正しいって
いつも聴くたびに感じます。

今年の春頃に新作が出るというニュースを見てなんだか無性に聴きたくなり久々に聴いたのですが・・・いや〜青春の思い出がボロボロと甦るような感じです。

思えばすでに10年以上の月日が経過していたのですが、『Semi-Charmed Life』がヒットしていたのがつい昨日のことのようにも思えます。当時高校生だった自分にとってはそれこそ『擦り切れるほど聴いた』名盤です。全曲がシングルカットしてもおかしくないほどのクオリティ、なかでもシングルとなった『Jumper』は3EB史上最高傑作だと思います。アルバム全体の流れも素晴らしく、やる気あるの？と心配になるようなタイトルの『Losing A Whole Year』から始まり、シングルヒット満載の序盤を経て、疾走感満点の『London』や、ミステリアスな『I Want You』など多彩な後半戦、そしてファンなら当たり前の名曲『Motorcycle Drive By』や『God of Wine』でとどめを刺されます。

90年代が好きな人なら一度はハマるはずの3EB、未聴の方は是非お試しを！

☆5個では足りないです。このアルバム90年代の名作/傑作です。当時の高校生・大学生はかなりの人が聞いていたのではないでしょうか。まさに『青春』がつまっています。
　
1.Losing a Whole Yearは、一曲目にしてビックリさせられた。かなりのロックナンバー。3.Semi-Charmed Lifeはかれらのファーストシングル。爆発的な大ヒットで1998年のロックシングルで最も売れた曲(？)ではなかったでしょうか。歌詞とは違った音で矛盾を聞くものに与えながら爽快に幕を閉じる。歌詞もメッセージ性が強いのでみてほしい。4.Jumper、セカンドシングル。これもかなりヒットしたラジオでは34が当時かかりまくってた。このＰＶ・歌詞ともにメッセージが強い。アコースティックな音とロックが上手く絡んで素晴らしい曲だ。6.How's It Going to Beもシングルカットされた。『これからどうなるんだろう』という気持つが、かなり伝わる。イントロのギターダインが美しく、その後ろから聞こえてくるドラムが最高だ。いいバラードです。
7.Thanks a Lot、9.Good for You、11.I Want YouもそれぞれＧＯＯＤ！そして、このアルバムで重要なポジションに置かれているのが12.Background、13.Motorcycle Drive By、14.God of Wineだ。バラードロックはこういうものだ。と言わんばかりのもの。この独自性と創造性に驚いた人は多いだろう。アコースティックギターが美しいメロディーを、エレキギターは豪快に唸る。そして、ヴォーカルの表現力。ベースがときに、たの音を引き連れて走る。ここまで音楽に感動させられたことはない。

彼らの作り出す音は、他のロックとは違う。度肝を抜かれるメロディー。創造性がすごくあって、その音は、ひとつの世界を作り上げています。ヴォーカルは、力強い、また表現力が半端ではない。ギターとベース・ドラムもそれぞれが存在感をもって独立し、また、刺激し合い曲が流れている。今までのロックではなかったような現象が３ＥＢの音楽にはある。
　lifehouse,googoodolls,incubusなど好きな人にオススメです。
