寺山修司の演劇「トマトケチャップ皇帝」からタイトルがつけられたというアルバム。

TORTOISEのジョンマッケンタイアがプロデュースをつとめ、
音響的な実験性とこのグループ独自のポップさが両立された大傑作。
このアルバムを彼らの最高傑作に挙げる人も多い。

特に「CYBELE'S REVERIE」は必聴。
独特の、品が良く幻想的な浮遊感を心行くまで味わってください。

１９９６年にリリースされた５枚目のアルバム。これを彼らの最高傑作として挙げられることも多いアルバムですね。前作までにあった荒削りさが薄れて、ポピュラリティが格段に進歩した作品と言え、非常に耳あたりの良いサウンドとなっています。この作品で彼らのサウンドは一つの完成系に近づいた気がしますね。「Tortoise」のJohn MacCentireがプロデュースに当たったという事なので、もっと実験的なモノになるかと思いきや、かなりポップ度の高い作品でびっくり。彼らの初期からの特徴であった塗り込めオルガンと、ハンマー・ビートに彩られた単調なサウンドは姿を消し、様々なヴァラエティに富んだアプローチによるアレンジが施され、サウンドの振幅が広大なレンジになり、ある意味彼らっぽくないアルバムとも言えます。新機軸と言えるストリングスを大幅に導入するなど明らかに次なる地平へと旅立つ序曲．．．っていうか、これで完成されてないか？相変わらずメロディも魅力的で、これ以上彼らのサウンドに何を求めるかっていう意味では評価が分かれるアルバムではあるけれど、あまりのハイ・クオリティさに度肝を抜かれる作品と言え、最高傑作の声にも素直に頷ける名盤アルバムです。

4.0 out of 5 stars ある実験バンドがポップになった瞬間, 2009/3/28

某Rock雑誌から頻繁にインタビューを受けるなど、認知度はありつつも、
それまではどこかカルトバンドだったようなステレオラブ。
ジャケの爆発感よろしく、コアなファンと洋楽リスナーの温度差が一気に狭まったアルバム。

初期のハンマービート感からかろうじてスウィングし始めていて、
けどやっぱりぎこちない……そんな揺らぎがなんともオーガニックに感じられた時期のレコーディングだ。
徹底的な人力ルーパーとなった楽器隊、そして故メアリー・ハンセンの裏ヴォーカル。
タイトルにもなっているEmperor Tomato Ketchupでは珍しくリードをとっているが、
Metronomic UndergroundやNoise of Carpetでは故障したアンドロイドの如く
徹底的に無感情にフレーズを繰り返してくれる。

先に進まなければならない、前を見なければならない、
そんなメッセージは実はフロントウーマンであるLaetitiaの歌詞の中にも
繰り返し現れているのに、ステレオラブというと、どうしても
なぜかこのメアリー在籍時の音だけが頭の中でループしてしまう。
それはやっぱり実験といいつつもびよんびよんぼよんぼよん楽しくてしょうがない
このアナログシンセ音の幸福感のせいだろうか。

このバンドの音を特徴づける要素となっていてFarfisaオルガンなども
ライブ等で見ると決して小さくはないし実は運搬とかもものすごく
大変だったんじゃないか（そのくせ香しく「チープ」な音）、とか邪推するのだが、
ぜんぶデジタルの箱に入る寸前の時代だったから、逆にムダにいろいろ楽器を
持ち歩いて至福の音を奏でるのがこのバンドは楽しくてしょうがなかったのかもしれないとも思う。

と、そんな時代考証を抜きにしても、
最初の導入トラック(1 Metronomic underground, 2 Cybele's reverie)だけで十分楽しめるアルバムです。
