　1972年にデビューし、70年代に数々の名作を発表、シンガー・ソングライター、ウェスト・コーストを代表する活躍を見せたジャクスン。80年代にも4枚のアルバムを発表するも、1980年の"Hold Out”後は作品内容・サウンドの両面で停滞していた。本盤は1993年発表の11作目、90年代に入って始めてのアルバムである。

　で、内容だが・・・これがタイトル通り、実に"alive"な仕上がり。

　作品内容的にはとてもパーソナル。当時の恋人との別れ等、厳しい状況のなかで”僕と君”の世界が彼ならではの視点で語られる。サウンド的にも80年代にあった、画一的なノリのロック・サウンドはなく、レゲエのビートを取り入れたり、憂いのあるバラードがあったり、曲によって起伏・陰影のあるものになっている。

　80~90年代では最も素晴らしいアルバムだ。

前２作は佳曲もあるが社会的なメッセージが強く、これはちょっと、というファンが多かったと思う。本作は久々にラヴ・ソングを集めた作品。恋の悩み、別れを歌った作品が多いが、彼の私生活での体験が反映しているのだろう。ただし、私小説的になることはなく、昇華して普遍性を帯びた歌詞の世界は何れも味がある。サウンド面では聴きやすい曲がほとんどで、ソリッドなロック路線は影を潜めている（（５）が唯一ハード）。バラードやゆったりとした曲が多く、特に（９）はベスト盤ヴェリー・ベストに採用された惚れ惚れする曲。（２）は彼のベスト・オブ・ライヴで採り上げられた、これまた佳曲。シャープなかっこいい曲の代表はタイトル曲の（１）。冒頭から本作への期待を高めてくれる。（３）はレゲェとラップの組合せの楽しい曲。という具合に、多彩な曲調で、名曲充実度は高い。上の商品説明では印象的な作品に限って過去の傑作をなぞって云々と書かれているが、私は賛成しない。基本はジャクソン節だが、９０年代の音で彼の成熟した感性が示されている。バック・メンバーは曲によって様々で、デイヴィッド・リンドレー、ワディ・ワクテル、ヴァレリー・カーター等が参加した曲もあるが、彼のベスト・オブ・ライヴ（９４，９６年のコンサート）でバンドを組むケヴィン・マコーミック(b)、スコット・サーストン(kb etc.)、モーリシオ・レワック(dr), ルイス・コンテ(perc.)はほぼ全曲に参加。傑作ベスト・オブ・ライヴのメンバーが脇を固めており、サウンド面での充実は保証つき。特にスコットはジャクソンとともに全曲をプロデュースし、（２）と（６）はさらにドン・ウォズが加わって３者がプロデュース。多くの仲間に囲まれてジャクソンはどっこい生きていていたことを示した彼の８０〜９０年代最高の作品として推奨する。

Jackson Browneは人生の転機に良作が出来る事が多いようだ。７０年代制作された多くの名作は、失恋や知人の死に直面し、その悲しみを克服しようとするエネルギーの全てを曲に注ぎ込んだと感じるほど内容が濃い。本作は９０年代初のアルバムであるが、当時のシンガーソングライター然とした、作風が蘇りつつある。離婚という人生のうえでは大変大きな転機を経て制作されたこともあり、失恋に関する歌詞が多い。８０年代の彼に不満を持っていた初期からのファンは十分納得出来る素晴らしい作品。ただ初期の頃のようなドンヨリした孤独感ある曲調は少なく、ポップ。
