Four cuts, including the Grammy-winning "Don't Know Much," feature duets between Ronstadt (still singing with power and assurance even at the top of her range) and angel-voiced Aaron Neville. Other highlights include "Adios," with multitracked background vocals by Brian Wilson, and the title song, which is driven to new heights by the Skywalker Symphony Orchestra and the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir. ８２年のゲット・クローサー以降、フランク・シナトラなどで有名なネルソン・リドルと組んだスタンダード作を３作つくり、ドリー・パートン、エミリー・ハルスとのカントリー・アルバム『ＴＲＩＯ』やメキシカン・ミュージックに取り組んだ『ソングス・フロム・マイ・ファーザー』など話題作を発表していましたが、久々にポップ・フィールドに戻って来たこの作品を待っていました。わざわざ“フューチャリング・アーロン・ネヴィル”と並記されているように彼の歌声も４曲(３．４．５．１１．)でフューチャーされており、素晴らしい歌声が聞けます。３枚のスタンダード作からの収穫かのようにバックにはオーケストラも付き、この嫌みのないゴージャスさはアーロンの歌声と共にこのアルバムの最大の魅力です。ジミーウェッブの１．６．８．１０．(４曲)、エリック・ジャスティン・カズの２．カーラ・ボノフの３．７．１２(３曲)、ポール・キャラックの４．９．(２曲)、バリー・マンの５．など選曲もかつての趣向そのままで本当に嬉しい一枚でした。全曲素晴らしい出来ですが、貫禄のようなものを実感させ、名唱の一つともなった１．リンダのイメージそのままの３．そしてなんとなく自伝的にも聞こえる６．が目玉でしょう。その６．ではブライアン・ウィルソンのコーラスも全面で聞かれます。１０もいいなぁ・・・。

本作は、リンダがスタンダード・ナンバーへの挑戦などの経験を経て８９年に７年ぶりに発表したポップス路線のアルバム。７０年代にリンダがたてつづけにヒットさせたアルバム群を愛してやまない者にとっては、オーケストラの起用に代表される厚みのあるバックのサウンドに負けないだけの、一回りスケールを増した、それでいて艶やかな余裕あふれる声を披露してくれ、そしてシンガーとしての自信・気概・矜持が伝わってくる、衰えを知らない容色のポートレイトでアルバム・ジャケットを飾った本作を大歓迎したものです。今聴いても実に新鮮。特にリンダが７６年の名作「風にさらわれた恋」で３曲とりあげたカーラ・ボノフ自身のこれまた名作である「ささやく夜」の冒頭を飾った大名曲「トラブル・アゲイン」（私の記憶が正しければ、リンダはこの曲ができた頃から歌いたかったが、カーラがこの曲までリンダに歌われることに難色を示したといういわくつき）を遂にリンダの声で聴けて大喜びしたものでした。本作より１０年前のカーラ自身の歌と聴き比べるのも楽しい。甲乙つけ難いとはこのことで、各々の個性がよく表れていますが、リンダのパンチのある声と大胆な間奏部でのオーケストラの起用がかっこいい本作のアレンジは実に秀逸。本当にこの曲は傑作。この曲だけのために本作を買っても損をすることはありません。

１９８９年にリリースされた、リンダ・ロンシュタットのゴージャスなアルバム。７年振りのポップ・アルバムということで、当時随分と評判になった。どちらかというとカントリーに傾いていたリンダが、久々にフル・オーケストラやゴスペル・コーラスをバックに歌った。バックを受け持ったオーケストラは「スカイウォーカー・シンフォニー・オーケストラ」で、この点話題にも事欠かなかった。彼女は、恋多き女性としてゴシップも多かったし、女性の色気が伝わってくる大物女性シンガーが、ようやく姿をみせてくれた、そんな感じがする作品。歌声が聞けただけでも感謝してしまいます。静かな夜に、お酒でも飲みながら聴いて下さい。
