1988年リリース。MTV世代ならこのアルバムからシングル・カットされた『Fast Car』のヴィデオ・クリップを見た人も多いだろう。内気な彼女の顔は影でほとんど隠れてしまっていたが、彼女の低い低い声で歌われるこの曲のクリップは一度見たら忘れられないほどインパクトの強いものだった。そして

And I got a plan to get us out of here
I been working at the convenience store
Managed to save just a little bit of money

という詞。レジを打ち、アルコール中毒の父と暮らす生活から逃げ出したいという気持ちをボーイフレンドの車に託す気持ちが痛いほど出ていた。僕の中に彼女の哀しそうな下向きの表情と一緒に残っているアルバムである。

80~90年代の境目頃って、アメリカに荒んだ空気が流れていた時代です
よね。先の見えない構造不況とか、湾岸戦争とか。
音楽的には総じてハデに装っている80'sを引きずっていたのですが、
そこに飾り気まったくなしの、うつむき加減の彼女が、
"Fast Car"を引っさげて出てきた時の衝撃。
奇異ということでなく、いきなり本音を突かれたような感覚に近かったなと。

明るい曲調のものは殆どありませんが、ずっと静かに耳を傾けていたくなる
ソウルフルなフォークナンバーが並びます。
#2Fast Carが突出していますが、他にも#5,#9などが味わい深く、
総じてベーシックなものの方が彼女らしさが出ていると感じます。

ちなみにグラミーは、この年と97年に二度ノミネート。

　1980年代の音楽というと機械的で耳あたりのいい「大人のロック」が一般的でしたが、このアルバムはそんな1988年に発表された、当時としては異色の作品でした。しかしその後1988年のグラミー賞でBest Contemporary Folk Albumを受賞し"Fast Car"もBest Female Pop Vocal Performanceを受賞。1989年にはRolling Stone誌の企画「80年代のベスト・アルバム」特集で10位にランクされ、また同誌2003年の「ベスト500」にも261位で選出されました。
　・・・ただ、こうした事実は、本当に「どうでもいいこと」です。アルバムを聴けば、分かると思います。一度聴けば圧倒的な迫力に沈黙せざるを得ないでしょう。
　オトとして聴いてもいいのですが、歌詞をじっくり読みながら聴くとより素晴らしいです。例えば"Fast Car"はよりよい人生を求めて父と離婚して出て行った母とアルコール依存症の父を背景とした、父を養うために学校を辞めて働く語り手が主人公の歌(Lasse Hallstromの映画「ギルバート・グレイプ」みたいですね)。語り手は彼氏の車に夢と希望を託し「出て行くか、このまま生きて死んでいくのか」の決断をしようとしているけれど、歌詞からは「離れられないという諦め」がにじみ出ている・・・そんな内容です。楽器なしで歌われる"Behind The Wall"は壁の向こうから聞こえてくる隣人夫妻の暴力と叫び声に怯える語り手の歌で、夢であってほしいと願いながら魂が凍りつく思いをする語り手と、警察の事務的な言葉が絶望的に対比されます。それは同時期のSuzanne Vegaの独唱"Tom's Diner"が詩的で美しかったのとは対照的でした。そんな風にどの曲も貧困や暴力など社会問題を弱者の視点から語った印象的な歌詞です。簡潔なスタイルで淡々と歌っていますが、ロックがもともと持っていた生々しい生の衝動を感じさせられる、強烈なインパクトのあるアルバムです。
　「ロックは絶望と劣等感と闘いながらここまできたんだ、それが分かんない奴はロックを聴くな！」とかなんとか言ったのは渋谷陽一氏ですが、確かにそんな気分にさせられる一枚。ロックが好きな人には間違いなくお勧めです。
