リンダ・ロンシュタットと言えば何と云ってもこのCDである！
１９２０年代から１９４０年代の古い曲を唄い上げながら、リンダは自分の曲にしてしまった！
それは、彼女の歌唱力の成せる業である。
１９８０年代初めに出たこのWhat's Newは、彼女のそれまでのスタイルを変えたアルバムなのである。
リンダを聴いてみたい、リンダのCDを初めてだが買ってみたいと言う人には、このCDが御奨めである。
数曲だが阿川泰子も彼女のアルバムに収めている曲が、このWhat's newには収録されているので聴き比べをして見るのも面白いだろう。
マレーネ・ディートリッヒのアルバムを当たって見るのも楽しい。
私は、こうしてリンダと阿川泰子、リンダとマレーネ・ディートリッヒを聴き比べて楽しんでいる。

リンダ・ロンシュタット初のスタンダード・ジャズボーカルモノ(1983年作)。
個人的には、リンダというとカントリー畑から出てきた素朴さやその後のあまりにもメジャーな活動が頭にあって、正直どうかなという不安はあったが、ここではネルソン・リドルの強固な普遍性を持ったアレンジの下、リンダもとてもストレートにフェイクなしで、スタンダード･バラードの名曲の数々を歌い上げている。ここまで癖のない澄んだ伸びのある歌を歌える人だととは正直、思っていなかったのでうれしい誤算だった。この洗練された雰囲気を生み出しているのは、これ以前に録音したスタンダード集をオクラ入りさせてまで、これを録ったという強固な姿勢かもしれない。ともかくポピュラー歌手が、今度はジャズボーカルでもやってみましたという片手間な感じがここには全くない。
唯一の難点としては、選曲において、全曲スローバラードを選んだということくらいで、どこから聴き始めてもその美しい歌声にハッとさせられる反面、一気に最初から聴いていくと、少しフックが足りないかなという点くらいである。とはいえ、リンダの歌い手としての実力の程を、しっかりと味わえる一枚となっているのは充分に魅力的だと感じた。

間違いなく、リンダ・ロンシュタットの最高傑作アルバム。

世界中で売れまくり、ネルソン・リドル・オーケストラと共に、
全米はもとより、ワールドライブツアーも行われました。

そう、編曲＋指揮は、
２０世紀最大のシンガー、フランク・シナトラの名アレンジを担当した、
ネルソン・リドルなのです！

ネルソン・リドルの偉大さは、シナトラ、ナット・キング・コール、
ジュディー・ガーランド、エラ・フィッツジェラルド・・・といった、
１９５０年代〜のアメリカ音楽黄金期の偉大な歌手の全てが、
ネルソン・リドルの名アレンジを必要とし支えられ、
また数々のハリウッド映画の音楽や、テレビ番組等でも大活躍、
リドルの流麗かつダイナミックかつ繊細で、革新的なサウンドは、
現在に至るまで他の追随を許さない、素晴らしいものだと思います。

限りなく美しいバラードをストリングスで奏で、
明るいラブソングは、華やかなビッグバンドでスイングし、
シナトラ＝リドル・サウンドは、アメリカ音楽の頂点と言われています。

ネルソン・リドルは、亡くなる１９８６年までの間に、
リンダと３枚の最良のジャズ・アルバムを制作、
これらの作品は、いわば、ネルソン・リドルの遺作であり、
アメリカ音楽・最大最良の文化であるスタンダードナンバーに対する、
リドルからの愛情と感謝の作品だと思います。

スイングする名曲も収録の続編「Lush Life」、
そしてアルバム制作中にリドルが亡くなり、
彼の信頼するスタッフとリンダが総力を挙げて完成させた「For Sentimental Reasons」も、大感動の必聴ものです！！！

リンダ・ロンシュタットの歌唱力・表現力、
そして天才ジョージ・マッセンバーグのサウンド・エンジニアリングも最高です。
