   イーグルスが「01'55」をカヴァーしたのかもしれないが、あたかもケルアックの『路上』の忘れられたシーンからあらわれた、くたびれ果てたビート詩人を連想させるトム・ウェィツは、他のカリフォルニアのシンガー・ソングライターと比べ、かなり異質な孤高の存在であった。ウェイツのビートニク・スタイルのお家芸は色あせてしまったかもしれないし、事実、後年、音楽的な面で非常に大胆なソングライターに成長するまでにいたった。
   しかし、この2ndアルバムは、甘美でロマンチックなブルース調の「New Coat of Paint」（「お前はきれいなドレス、俺はきちんとタイを結んで」）や彼のヒップスター朗誦の中でもベストといえる「Diamonds on My Windshield」を含めた彼の初期の傑作がいくつか収められている。
   特に悲しみに沈んだ葬送歌風の「San Diego Serenade」（「徹夜して初めて朝日を見ることになった」）とジーンとするほどセンチメンタルな「（Looking for）The Heart of Saturday Night」（「赤信号で止まって、青で出発。今夜の俺はまるっきりの別人だぜ」）は不朽の名作である。（John Milward, Amazon.co.uk）

’70年代初期に登場した,ユニークなシンガー・ソングライターの2~4作目。『土曜日の夜』は’74年の作品で,初期の代表作であるタイトル曲など,個性豊かに大都会の孤独をうたっている。『娼婦たちの晩餐』は’75年の7月にハリウッドで録音されたライヴ盤で,LA最後のボヘミアンと呼ばれた彼のジャージーなステージが再現される。『スモール・チェンジ』は彼の作品の中でもヘヴィな印象の強い1枚だが,その重さが逆に何とも言えない魅力をかもしだしている。やはり,酒と2人で聴くべきでありましょう。

　酔いどれ詩人というとこの人を思い浮かべる人は多いと思います。
都会の片隅で生きる男たちの感傷を歌う彼の嗄れた歌声は，映画ファン
の間でもおなじみになっています。また，俳優としても，「ダウン・バ
イ・ロー」「ショート・カッツ」等の映画に出演しています。

　このアルバムは,1974年の作品で，1949年生まれの彼は，当時２５歳だ

ったということになります。彼の歌の主人公は中年から初老の酔いどれ
というイメージがあったので，今回改めて確認して意外に思いました。
しかしよく聴きなおすと，ボヘニアニズムやデカダンスの底に，青年ら
しい甘美なロマンティシズムが流れているように思われました。

　一曲目の「ニュー・コート・オブ・ペイント」は「オレたち二人で街

を塗りかえ!!てやろうぜ」といったノリの曲です。最近では，内野聖陽と
秋山菜津子の二人芝居「ブルー・ルーム」のオープニングとエンディン
グに使われていていました。
　２曲目の「サンディエゴ・セレナーデ」は，シンプルながらも心に沁
みる歌詞とメロディーで，ちょっと泣かせます。
　３曲目の「シヴァー・ミー・テンバーズ」は，過去に別れを告げ，新
たなる船出をする時の心意気を歌っているように，私には聞こえます。
　いずれも，一度聴いたらいつまでも心に残る名曲ぞろいです。
　人生という旅の道連れにふさわしいアルバムです。

７０年代のｼﾞｬｽﾞ/ﾌｫ-ｸ時代の最高傑作！
＜ﾆｭ-･ｺ-ﾄ･ｵﾌﾞ･ﾍﾟｲﾝﾄ＞、＜ｻﾝﾃﾞｨｴｺﾞ･ｾﾚﾅ-ﾃﾞ＞、＜土曜日の夜＞、＜ﾌﾟﾘ-ｽﾞ･ｺ-ﾙ･ﾐ-･ﾍﾞｲﾋﾞ-＞等々の名曲のｵﾝﾊﾟﾚ-ﾄﾞに酔いしれるばかりです。

ﾄﾑ･ｳｪｲﾂの代表作と言うといつも＜ｸﾛ-ｼﾞﾝｸﾞ･ﾀｲﾑ＞や＜ﾚｲﾝ･ﾄﾞｯｸﾞ＞が取り上げられていますが、どれか一枚ならば私は絶対に本盤を推します。間違いなく名盤です！

トム・ウェイツといえば、やはりあのしわがれた声である。喉を限界まで潰したしたような声に、最初は誰しもが驚き、違和感を覚えるであろうが、段々とその声の心地よさに魅了されていくはずである。
初期ということで、このアルバムの頃のトムウェイツはまだまだ声が若々しい。とはいえ、やはりはトムウェイツといわんばかりに、その声は重く美しい。

そしてこのアルバムは、初めてトムウェイツを聴く人でも聴きやすい、キャッチーでメロウな曲が満載されていて、ラストまで気持ちよく聴きとおすことが出来る。飛び抜けて凄い曲があるわけでもないが、名作というに十分な出来である。まずはこの一枚から、彼の世界に入ってみるのはいかがだろうか？
