   セッション・ミュージシャンとして活躍していた面々が、リンダ・ロンシュタットのレコーディングに参加したのがきっかけで、71年に結成された。76年発表の初のベスト集は、75年までにリリースされたアルバム4枚からの選曲である。本作からは、実力派アメリカン・ロック・バンドとして着実に作品を残してきたことや、カントリー・ロック調からヘヴィ嗜好といった、サウンド・カラーの変遷をもうかがい知ることができる。
   ちなみにあの『ホテル・カリフォルニア』は、この作品リリース直後に発表されているため未収録である。（春野丸緒）

変な表現ですが、単純なベスト盤よりもこれ１枚が別の表現力を持つ異色のベスト盤。「ホテル・カリフォルニア」が入っていませんので、厳密なベスト盤ではないのですけど。他のイーグルのベスト盤もっていますが、私はこれを好んで聞いています。構成がいいのかなと思います。極めつけはやはり「呪われた夜」ですね。出だしは何ともいえません。

イーグルスのこのベスト盤はベスト盤の中でも一番のお気に入り。10曲の選曲も巧みでイーグルスのよさを十分に堪能できます。私は分離派とでもいうのでしょうか。Ｐａｒｔ１とＰａｒｔ２は別々に楽しむほうがいいと考えます。ベリー・ベストもそれなりに味わいがあるのですが、初期と後期では作風が違うのでその違いを味わうべきでしょう。このベストではカントリーっぽい曲が多いのですが、非常に心に染みる名曲ばかりです。私のお気に入りはLying Eyes, Desperado, Peaceful Easy Feeling,なぜかカントリー風の曲ばかりです。このアルバムはあのスリラーを超え、最も売れたアルバムとなっているのもうなずけます。

イーグルスっていつ聴いてもいいねぇ。イーグルスのベスト盤を買うつもりならこれとグレーテストヒッツ vol.2 の二枚をお薦めします。この二枚があれば他はいらない、とまでは言いませんが、イーグルスの魅力にドップリとはまることはできます。収録曲では、テイクイットイージー、ならず者、呪われた夜、テキーラサンライズなんかが好きですね。イーグルス入門編にはこれ以上のものはありませんね!
