　「Sub Pop」レーベル・コンピレイションへの参加、EP 「Screaming Life」のリリースで、シアトル・シーンの基礎を築いた SOUNDGARDEN。既にメジャーからの誘いはあったものの、「今はまだ自由にやりたい」との思いからインディーズよりフル・アルバム「ウルトラメガ OK」をリリースした彼ら。これで一気に名を上げ、本作で待望のメジャー・デビューとなった。

　低音で吐き捨てるようなヴォーカルが多いグランジ系。しかしこのバンドは違う。クリス・コーネルはコブシを回す荒々しい歌い上げが特徴。男性では滅多にいない超高音で、ツェッペリンの「Communication Breakdown」を、更に高い別のメロディーに変えて歌うほど。それでいて、低音を叩きつける曲でも十分な声量がある。グランジ随一のシンガーと言っていい。

　BLACK SABBATHのヘヴィネスと、LED ZEPPELINのグルーヴを、現代に再現したとも言われ、この系列の音楽としては正統派である。そのサウンドの核は、日本人ベーシスト：ヒロ・ヤマモトその人だ。大学での修士号取得のため、本作が最後の作品となってしまう。しかし彼が去った後、グルーヴの質が、ワールド・ミュージック的なものに変化。初期のうねりまくる荒々しさはかなり失われてしまう。

　また、高音で徹底的に歌い上げていたのも、本作が最後で、以後はラフに歌う低音の曲が増えていく。鬱積したアメリカの若者らしい荒涼感。一方で伝統的な音も素直に受け継いだ本作は、バランスという意味で、彼らの代表作であると思う。

　タイトル曲的な「Loud Love」、艶のある高音の節回しが鮮烈な「Hands All Over」など、印象的な曲が目白押しだ。「爆発する音が欲しい」と歌いながら、意外にピュアな詞もまた魅力。

前のULTRAMEGA-OKは音楽史的には有名で、SUPERUNKOWNを凌ぐほどだ。
だが、BAD MOTORFINGERを聴いたあとでも、本作は最高傑作であるという見方をする。
クオリティが高く飽きない。LedZeppelinやBlackSabbathの影響を受けているのは確かだ。只、当時のSoundGirdenはシアトルで事実上No.1バンドでありもっとも完成されていたと思われる。あのカートコバーンもオーディションを受けたがったというほどだ。（実際、NIRVANA『BLEACH』で参加していたギタリストジェイソンエバーマンはSoundGirdenに在籍したこともあった。）
陰鬱なやりばのない若者達の雰囲気、世界観などが鮮やかな音楽によって表現されている。SOUNDGARDENが色鮮やかな音楽であるとすると、もっとも鮮やかなのは紛れも無くSUPERUNKOWNだと思うが、本作は深いグレーといったところか。晴れ晴れしない気分の時に聴くと、和まされる作品であると同時に個人的には90年代ロックNo.1と言って良いものだと考える（10年、20年経っても聴くに耐えうる傑作）。

御案内させていただきます。次のアルバムバッドモーターフィンガーで大ばけするわけだが、その前段階のアルバム２枚目。かちっとしたアルバムではなく、ブレイクする予兆を感じさせるやや散漫なアルバム。サバスやツエッペリンのイディオムをうまく取り込みグランジの波にのったバンド。よくも悪くもブレイク前夜のアルバム。（６点）
