ＭＴＶで１曲目“Set Them Free”のＰＶを見て、やられた。かっこよすぎた。
確かゴドレイ＆クレームの作品じゃなかっただろうか？
メンバー全員かっこよかった。動きがよかったね。
ブランフォード・マルサリス(Sax)、ウェザー・リポートのオマー・ハキム(Ds）、マイルス・デイビス・バンドのダリル・ジョーンズ(b)、
ケニー・カークランド(Key)、そして女性コーラス二人。
メンバーはジャズ系の人ばかり。
（このアルバムから、この辺りのミュージシャンが好きになったのかな？）
このシングルはポリスの「見つめていたい(Every Breath you take)」と対になっているらしい。
レゲエ調でシングルカットもされた２、
グラミー賞でオーケストラをバックに歌ったのが印象的だった4thシングルの３、
（ソ連が崩壊した今となっては、多少詞の世界がずれてしまいましたが）
元のポリスのバージョンとは打って変って、リズム隊がグイグイひぱっていくグルーヴが心地好い５、
淡々と盛り上がっていく６,７を経由して、
８はインストでジャジーだけどなんとなく滑稽な感じがするのが笑える。
そして、ウッドベースにのせて、渋くスティングが歌う９から、
一人古い家の中で歌うＰＶがかっこいい、ギターのラインが特徴的な１０でアルバムが締めくくられています。

発売から20年経ってるけど、今聴いてもかっこいいです！
（ジャケットも素晴しいですよね）
後のアルバムも聴き続けてるけど、このアルバム程の衝撃は得られません。
このアルバムのツアーの2枚組ライヴアルバム“Bring on the Night”も必聴ですね。
1曲目から故ケニー・カークランドがぶっとんでます。
当時作られたこのバンドのドキュメンタリー、ブリング・オン・ザ・ナイトが、昨年、ＤＶＤで最発売されてました。

The Policeの余分なものを削ぎ落とされた中で広がる世界観を好んで
いた私にとっては多少ショックな作品。元来ストイックな感のあった
Stingがこんなにカラフルに変身するとは・・と当時唖然とした記憶
がある。
そもJazz畑のStingがThe Policeの中では実現出来ない部分が多く、
一気にやってみたいことが玉手箱のように吹き出した感じがする。
バンド時代もやっていたレゲエは引き続き顔をのぞかせるが、Jazzへ
の接近はプレーヤーの選択やアレンジ面から強く現れている。
後のアルバムに続く変拍子（又はポリリズム）モノやJazzPopのよう
な味付けの曲、声高に言いたい事はしんみりとしたバラードに持ち
込むところ　等、後段のアルバムの作りの原型となった非常に重要な
作品には変わりない。
時代のIconである彼が音楽の融合を目指し、多くの支持を集めるため
POPに走ったことから賛否両論を招いたアルバムだったように思う。
今からしてもちと作りが“軽い”所もある面、かのZappa翁が若いうち
から喰うために遮二無二音楽に浸ったため斯様な高尚な目標を持たず
とも血反吐をはきながらそれを易々とうち立て、又は破壊しつつも、
マニア受けに終始（結果として）してきたことと対象的に感じる。

最初に聞いたときからもう15年以上たっているのに、
今聞いても全然古臭さを感じない。
ジャズやレゲエをとりいれた不思議だけれど、
いつまでも色あせないSting独特の音には、懐かしささえ感じる。

歌詞を聞くと、少し経験豊富になった今になって初めて
理解できることなんかもあり、新しい発見に満ちている。

内容的には冷戦が終結したあとに聞く「Russians」は、
不思議だけど、これにも歴史を感じられておもしろい。
「set them free」や「Fortress Around Your Heart」なんかは、
恋愛を重ねるとより深く共感できるのではないだろうか。

このあとも数々の素晴らしい作品を出しているけれど、
やはり初のソロデビューの作品をおさめたこのCDは、

自分自身の特別な思いいれもあるけれど、
たくさんの人に人生の一部分を共有する音として聞いてもらいたい。
10年後にもそのあせない夢に驚くことは確実だと思うから。
