Actually that's a bit of a cheap shot, especially considering what a refreshingly innovative album this was. Jackson truly hit his stride with a memorable set that combines new technology and classic songwriting. From the infectious "Chinatown" to the hits "Stepping Out" and "Breaking Us in Two," the album is a showcase for killer hooks wrapped up in shiny keyboards and Latin-tinged percussion. JJ氏の第5作は、文句なく彼が今でも誇りとする代表作だ。デビュー以降の彼は、"ニューウェイヴ＝怒れる若者"のイメージを払拭するかのように、ジャズやジャンプ・ブルース、レゲエ等の様々なジャンルに軸足を移して作品を発表しながら、自分のスタイルを醸成してきた。そうして出来た一枚が、80年代初頭の雰囲気にみごとに合致したのだろう。

とはいえ、バンドの構成を見れば分かるとおり、ヘソ曲がり・ヒネクレ者のJJ氏のこと、ジャケットのイラストからNY風"オシャレ"だなどと片付けてはいけない。歌詞には彼流のアイロニーが満載されている。出来れば、Ｎ＆ＤIIを手にする前に聴いて欲しい。これがあなたのツボにはまれば、自室にJJのCDが山積みになるはずだ。

80年代、カフェバーがブームになった。
MTVを垂れ流すモニターがあって、BOSEのスピーカーが天井からぶら下がり、サントリーカクテルバーみたいなジントニックを出す薄暗い場所だ。スピーカーからはホール＆オーツやABCやスパンダーバレエなんかが流れていた、胡散臭いNY的空間。

恥ずかしいことに僕もせっせと通っちゃったりしたもんだけれど、まがい物の匂いがするそんな空間に、一瞬だけRealな空気を運んでくる曲があった。JJの"Steppin' Out"である。

それもそのはず、JJはロンドンの王立音楽院でピアノ、パーカッション、作曲などを学び、Jazzバンドで演奏をしていたという経歴を持っているのである。

このアルバムは、元来パンク野郎だったJJにふさわしく制約(例えばギターは使わない、とか)を課して、活動の拠点をイギリスからNYに移して発表された作品で、制約と環境の変化による緊張感が全体に漂っている素晴らしい出来栄えの一枚だと思う。

"Seppin' Out"は文句の無い名曲で、抜群のドライブ感で、聴く人の足を意味も無く夜の街に向かわせてしまうような魔力がある。他の曲もひねくれたビートとシニカルなボーカルによって、Steppin'~の歌詞のごとく「The other side」に突き抜けちゃうような魅力満載の構成だと思う。特にラストの"A Slow Song"は彼自身の音楽の魅力を語りかけるような哀切なバラードだ。

このアルバムにおけるJJの実験は大成功していて、聴く人は誰もがみな、ジャンルを越えたJJの世界に魅了されるとことだろう。

JJのファンの10中8・9が推薦するであろう名盤中の名盤。恥ずかしながら僕は3度このアルバムを買い直してしまうほど聴き込んだ一枚です。1から5まで流れるように続くエナジー&アイロニーは聴くものを釘付けにしてしまいます。

P.S.最近このIIが出て買いましたけどエナジーはかけらも感じられず、ガッカリしました。
