バカ売れしたNight & Dayの後に発表された作品。個人的にはJumpin' Jiveと並んで、最も良く聴く一枚だ。ホーンセクションの音が出だしから降ってきてカッコイイ#1（同名の映画「評決」に触発されて出来たとか…確かにP.ニューマンは、この作品での演技でオスカーを手にすべきだった）、現在でもライブでよく演奏される#4、詩がいかにもJJ氏らしい#8、エンディングに思わず唸る#9、前作とはまた別の「才能に脂がのった」力強さを味わえる。何より本作の特徴は、CD全体の構成の良さと音が透徹としている点である（どのような録音方法を採用したかは、リーフレットに子細に書かれている）。スピーカーを少し高い場所に置いて聴くと、一層堪能できるだろう。本作発表後、JJ氏は映画音楽にも本格的に手を広げ、コンスタントに年1作ペースで様々なバンド編成や録音方法を試しており、自分のスタイルを固定せずに、あくまで曲に合った音を追求していく彼の姿が見える1枚なのである。なお、今回はジャケットでも「遊んで」いる。おヒマな方は、Sonny RollinsのVolume 2を検索されたし。

このアルバムの発表当時、国内版のＣＤが発売されず、輸入版ＣＤを一生懸命探して入手した思い出があります。当時はまだＬＰからＣＤへの過渡期でした。私のオススメはイレイン　キャズウェルとのデュエット曲 Happy Ending　です。曲の中の一節　I'ts not so easy,it's '84 now.（イレイン　キャズウェルが唄う　そんなにうまくはいかないわ、だって今は1984年だものの歌詞）が何故か頭の中に焼きついて離れません。あと、１曲目のThe Verdict　はマツダの車のＣＭ曲で使われていました。

「ｿﾆｰﾛﾘﾝｽﾞVol.２」のｼﾞｬｹを色だけﾌﾞﾙｰからｵﾚﾝｼﾞに替えて
ｼﾞｮｰがJAZZに対するﾘｽﾍﾟｸﾄとｱｲﾛﾆｰをぶつけた一作。
内容的には、古い屋敷か何処かでの音響が非常に良い形での録音が
功を奏しているし、名曲「HAPPY ENDING」や「CHA CHA LOCO」、
「YOU CAN'T GET WHAT YOU WANT」といった秀作に彩られた名盤です。
個人的には「NIGHT & DAY」と並んで彼のBEST作と思っていますが、
愛着はこちらの方が上。
大学の頃、先輩が合宿で聞かせてくれたのが印象的。妙に沁みた。
今でもﾄﾞﾗｲｳﾞに持って行くことが多い一枚ですし、是非これだけは
押さえておいて貰いたいと切に望みます。
