5.0 out of 5 stars グランジの枠を越えたロック史でも稀に見る完成度, 2007/3/9
素晴らしい。冒頭から最後まで無駄なサウンドは一切無く、また曲毎の個性が強くそれでいてアルバム全体の印象は決して散漫にならず上手く統一されている。アルバム一枚の中で多くのアプローチに挑みすぎて纏まりを失ってしまったモノも多々あるが、このアルバムはその種ではない。個人的にガーデンはグランジ期のバンドの中でも極めて安定し、優れたバンドだと考える。その理由として、ボーカルの声に安定感がある、楽曲の独創性とアプローチが幅広い、演奏のレベルが高い、ということ。クリスの声は高音・ファルセット時に素晴らしい伸びを聴かせ、それでいて音域に関係無くメロディにブレが無い。カートもエディもペリーも越えた真のボーカリストとしてのクリスがそこにはいる(次点でアリスのレインも素晴らしい)。独創性にしても、特にこのSuperunknownに於いては中東〜東南アジア系のサウンドからサバス直系、パンク要素強いモノからサイケまで、とても幅広いサウンドメイキングに挑み、かつそれらが上手くガーデンのモノになっている。これほどの振り幅を見せたバンドは同時期のグランジにはまずいない。そしてそれらのサウンドを支える卓越した演奏技術。早いテンポでかつ複雑なリズム展開をするトラックでも、ドラムは一分の乱れも無く叩きこなし、聴いていても非常に安定感を得る(この点ではアリスのドラマーなどは決して上手いとは言えない)。ベースもメロディラインからリズム重視な部分までドラムと一体化しサウンドを腰の座ったモノへと昇華させている。そしてそのリズム隊に乗っかりメタルなリフから奇想天外なサウンドまでを複雑に掻き鳴らすギター。ガーデンを聴いていて独特のノリ・グルーブを感じるのは確固とした技術に支えられた彼等にしかないリズムがあるからだ。アリスのある種の終末感から初期パールの勢い・ニルバーナのポップさ…言わばグランジの全ての要素がこのアルバムには詰まっている。

文句無くSoundGardenの最高傑作のアルバムだ。このアルバムを聞いた時あまりの衝撃に全身が震えた。ブラックサバスを源流としたまったりどっしりしたベースラインの上に新しい試みがちりばめられ、これらの脳神経回路の如く複雑な結合が全体として一つのベクトルに収斂している。クリスコーネルのボーカルは圧倒的だが主張ではなく完全に曲に同化している。

リリースよりもう10年経つがその存在感は全く色あせない。解散してしまったのがとにかく残念。しかしこのアルバムは残っている。グランジの枠を超え、いつまでもロックの「原器」として受け継がれていくだろう。

NIRVANA、PERL JAMと共にグランジ三羽烏と並び称されるシアトル出身のオルタナティヴ・バンド「SOUNDGARDEN」の通算5作目となるスタジオ録音アルバム。90年代USロック・シーンに旋風を巻き起こしたグランジ・ロックの元祖（※SOUNDGARDENは一番最初にメジャー契約を取り付けたグランジ・バンドである）にとって初の全米No.1ヒット作となった本作であるが、それもそのはず、最初から最後まで耳が離せない充実度120%の内容に仕上がっており、まさしく90年代を代表する歴史的名盤と言っても過言ではない。特に先日、元RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINEのメンバー3人とのプロジェクト「CIVILIAN」が空中分解したことが伝えられたばかりのクリス・コーネルの変幻自在なヴォーカル・テクニックは特筆に値する。低音時に聴かれる力強く野太い声はエモーショナルなエディ・ヴェダー（PEARL JAM）のヴォーカルを彷彿とさせるが、高音パートになるとこれが一変、絶叫型シャウトも含めてサミー・ヘイガー（ex. VAN HALEN）のようにメタリックになるのは驚きだ。LED ZEPPELIN、BLACK SABBATHといった70's HR/HM系バンドからの影響がより強く伺えるサウンドの核である、ハード・エッジなキム・サイールのギターも一聴の価値アリ。ちなみにドラムは現PEARL JAMのマット・キャメロン。
