The last release from the Roger Waters-led incarnation of the band, The Final Cut is easily the most darkly provocative entry in the entire Pink Floyd catalog. Many fans and critics tend to think of it as a Roger Waters solo album, though it certainly hangs together much better than The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking or Radio K.A.O.S.. Others view it as a sequel to The Wall--and indeed, The Final Cut tackles many of the same issues (the futility of war, the innate powerlessness of the individual in modern society), albeit with twice the bile and intensity. The anger that fires songs like "The Hero's Return" and "Not Now John" is certainly legitimate, and Michael Kamen's orchestral arrangements are absolutely stunning, but the entire listening experience can be pretty draining. On the other hand, if you found The Wall to be too soft or commercial, The Final Cut is definitely the record for you. --Dan Epstein

これをピンク・フロイドの作品の一つと考えてしまうと、評価を誤るでしょう。これは、ロジャー・ウォーターズのアルバムです。スゴイです。聴く者を引きずり込む、恐ろしい出来栄えです。

もちろん、ピンク・フロイドにおけるウォーターズの比重が、これ以前から不自然なまでに大きかったのは事実ですが、このアルバムは、ちょっと事情が違います。やけに声が近くに聞こえるマイクを使い、（「ザ・ウォール」で味をしめた）オーケストラを使う。もちろんウォーターズの曲にピッタリのモッタリ感ドラマー（メイソン；ただし最後の曲は除く）を使い、何と言っても代え難いギタリスト（ギルモア）を使う（バンドとしての人間関係はバラバラ状態なので、まさに「使っている」感じ）。その一方、ピンク・フロイドの叙情性を柔らかく支え、シド・バレットの思い出を共有しつつウォーターズの暴走を押さえていたキーボ-ド（ライト）が不在。

結果として、やたら説得力のある音に乗ったウォーターズの情緒がそのまま飛び出す形となっています。父は戦争で死んだ。あの人も戦争で肉親を失った。世の中、まだその戦争をやるんだって。ふざけんじゃねぇ。ああ、君はどうして僕をおいていくの。なぜ、こうなんだろう。もう、だめだ。けれども…。等々、以前のピンク・フロイドでも漠然と表現されていた内容が、一気に、直接、ドッと来ます。これは、ある意味、コワイぐらいスゴイ。

やはり外国の音楽ですから、歌詞の面白さが伝わりにくいのが残念なところ。一例だけ挙げますと：'the gunners dream' の一節 'in the corner of some foreign field' は、英国の詩人 Rupert Brooke の 'The Soldier' という（英語圏ではよく知られた）詩をパッと思い出させるようにできている…のですが、普通の日本人としては「そんなもん知るかい」となりますなぁ。でもまぁ、要するに、さすがはウォーターズ、言葉の使い方もうまいというわけです。

なお、余談ながら、今は亡き自分の父親に対する深い叫び、という意味では Sting の 'The Soul Cages' も似ており、こちらもかなりの出来栄えです。ご興味があれば、どうぞ。

ロジャーウォーターズは、父親を、戦争で亡くしている。
このアルバムを覆い尽くしているのは、亡き父への想いと、戦争への厭世感と言っても
いいかもしれない。とにかく、全編火薬の臭いと、負傷兵の嘆き、そして「ロジャーの叫び」
に満ちている。ピンク・フロイドのというより、ロジャーのソロアルバムとしてとらえて聴いた方が、面食らわずに済むだろう。

「THE　WALL」の補足的な位置付けとだとして本作を知り、聴いたのだが、どうもそのような
「補足」レベルで収まるような、オトナシイ作品ではない、と思う。

個人的には、6.The Gunners Dream　に　思わぬかたちでドギモを抜かれた･･･。
この曲は「THE　WALL」のプリング・ザ・ボーイズ・バック・ホームの面影を湛えた曲である。
”少年たちを家に呼び戻そう ”から
”もう誰も子供を殺したりはしない”に変わり、私は、初めて、ロジャーが言いたかったことが、理解できたような気がする。
そしてこの曲は、ピンク・フロイドの全アルバムを通しても、最もロジャーの「叫び」を代表する作品だと、個人的に思う。

アルバムのバランス的には、確かにお世辞にも良いとは言えない。
だが、「僕はありのままの感情をさらすべきだと思った」と、The Final Cut＝最後の切り傷で
ロジャーが告白しているように、ロジャーを知っておきたい人には避けて通れない、「苦渋」を湛えた重く価値あるアルバムである。

数あるピンクフロイドの名曲の中で、欠かすことのできない1枚。　当時、「ピンクフロイドとは誰なのか(誰が精神的な中心人物なのかという意味)」ということが音楽雑誌で取りざたされていたが、この作品のジャケットに"a requiem for the post war dream by roger waters"と明記されており、その論争に終止符を打った。ピンクフロイドに対する世間の期待が増す中、「解散か存続か」と世界中で論議されていた矢先に出されたこのアルバムの意味は大きい。　淡々と独自世界を奏でながらも彼らの狂おしいまでの想いをつづる本作は、必聴に値する作品に仕上がっている。
