90年代中盤〜後半にかけてアメリカで流行したジャンル「ヒップ・“ポップ”」。スタートはまさにマライアのこのアルバムでした。それ以前にTLCがいましたが、音の黒さからして世界的な浸透度はそれほどでもなく、決定打となったのはやはりマライアだと思います。

今では普通となった「ヴォーカル＋（曲内に登場するラップも含め）ヒップホップ・フレイヴァ」のサウンドは、やはりアフリカン・アメリカンの人達のもの。当時は好き嫌いが別れるほどの物議もので、メインストリートの彼女がやるからこそ話題となり、意味があるものだったと思います。結果アルバムは大成功。シングルにもそれらの息吹を随所に盛り込み、彼女のアーティストとしての挑戦や存在価値を大きく印象付けることになりました。

加えて変化が見られるのは、そのヴォーカルスタイル。シングルしか聞いてこなかった人たちには、どうしてあんなに「ボソボソ」と歌うの？という疑問が。でも事実彼女は１STの頃から同様の歌唱を披露しており、ここに始まったことではありません。「the wind」「can’t let go」「so blessed」etc….。変化といったのはそれまでと大きく違った「膨らみのあるヴォーカル」が活き活きと披露されているからです。「daydream」からその傾向はありましたが、パーフェクトな歌唱は曲のバリエーションも含め、やはりこの「butterfly」のアルバム。

このアルバムで以前から一部のファンが離れたそうですが、このアルバムからマライアにのめり込んだファンの方が圧倒的に多いということも忘れてはいけないと思います。

タイトルの「BUTTERFLY」の名の通り、新境地を開拓すべく、チャレンジングに溢れる素晴らしいアルバムである。
１曲目の「Honey」は軽快なテンポのヒップホップナンバーから始まるこのアルバムは、やはりマライアならではのものだろう。
ラップ系、ダンス系、ソウル系のバラエティなミュージックに、定番のバラードなど、幅広い選曲。
今回はバックコーラスにも力を入れていて、メロディーとコーラスが、変幻自在に変わっていくなど、曲調にも様々なチャレンジが聴ける。
これもシングルヒットとなった「My All」もとても印象的であり、何時までも心に残る名曲だろう。

今聴くと、やっぱり新しさが感じられません。
HipHopというが、
「だから？」という疑問符がついてしまう。
初期の傑作との比較をしてもしょうがないが、
今、こういうアルバムを聴く意義はあまりないかな。
10年前の時代感覚だと思う。
2009年に聴くアルバムとしてはどうかな。
お安いので購入しておいても損はないけど。
