アメリカンハードロックの頂点ともいえる傑作アルバムでしょう。ジャーニーのアルバムといえば、セールス・知名度ともにエスケイプがNO.1かも知れませんが、稀代の名ボーカリスト：Sペリー加入後のインフィティから本作までの一貫したサウンドアプローチは本作でバンド的にも一つの終着点を迎えます。前作、前々作の二枚のモンスターアルバムに見られたロック色は薄まり、よりR＆B的なニュアンス及びSペリーのボーカルを全面的にフューチャーしたサウンドへの変化を感じます。 プロデューサーがマイクストーンからSペリー本人となったことからも、その後のジャーニーの行く末今ではなるほどと考えてしまいます。
但し、サウンドアプローチ的には全く申し分なく、Jケインのライト感覚豊かなキーボードをフューチャーした２．positive touch、Nショーンのジャージーで透明感豊かなギタープレイが堪能できる８．I'LL BE ALRIGHT WITHOUT YOU、そしてジャーニーの18番的なパワーバラード、
１１．WHY CAN'T THIS NIGHT GO ON FOEVER など聞き所満載です。
とにかく、バラードからミディアム、ハードロックまで巧みに歌い分けるSペリーの歌の旨さは、まさに特筆ものでロックボーカリストとしての彼の才能も最頂点の高みを感じさせてくれます。

メロディの豊かな瑞々しい曲が数多く収められた1986年の名作。
レトロな雰囲気のジャケットも相まって、メロディアス・ロックやAORが好きな人には堪らない一枚のはず。

成功を収めたバンドとしてのプレッシャーからか、前作『Frontiers』はやや肩に力の入ったハードなサウンドだったが、リラックスした雰囲気の本作は、彼等の持ち味であるメロディ重視のロックやバラードが蘇り、やっぱりJourneyって好きだな…と嬉しくなる出来映え。
中でも、軽やかなグルーヴが心地良い「Positive Touch」、「Suzanne」、ビター・スウィートなバラードの「I'll Be Alright Without You」、「Why Can't This Night Go On Forever」が秀逸。
1975年のデビュー以降、良質なアルバムを作り続けたJourneyは、本作でその長い活動に一旦は終止符を打つ。10年後の突然の復活作『Trial By Fire』のサウンドも基本的には本作の延長だと思う。

最近、個人的にヘビーローテーションなアルバム。
空中分解しかけていたバンドが意地で出したアルバムだ。ストレートにロックしているアルバム。キーボードで始まり、ギターが混ざり、ボーカルが溶け合う、いかにもジャーニーという1から始まり、どれもシングルカットできるレベルの曲が続く。
個人的には、エスケープよりフロンティアーズより好きなアルバム。
産業ロックを支えたジャーニーも、このアルバムを最後に長い眠りについてしまった。
