世代を超えたファン層を誇る、２０世紀最高のトップアーティストの１人、ビリー・ジョエル。
そんな彼の８０年代後半から９０年代にかけてのヒットナンバーを集めたベストの続編。
「歌詞のついた曲を書くのはやめた」と語った彼。
そのため、名作‘ストームフロント’からの曲が目立つ格好。
しかし、類まれなるポップセンスにただ圧倒されるばかり。

ボーナストラックも含め、満足の１枚であること間違いなし。！

AORなギターが鳴った楽曲が多い（部分的には名曲な9のピアノ弾き語りもあるが）。その代わりどの曲もメロディはさすがという聴かせどころを持ち、歌声は熱くソウルフルである。ソウルといえば、レイ・チャールズと共演している4のスローバラードは両者の勝るとも劣らない、声の甘美さがガチンコし素晴らしい演奏をみせる。
7はキャッチーなダンス風で、正統派な曲が揃う今作の中では何か驚かせるものがある。しかし全米1位、教科書にも載ったのだとか。それは彼が生れた49年から作品発表までを歴史年表にした歌詞からだろう。
圧巻は9のピアノ弾き語り「そして今は…」だ。これになるとロックの歌声からピュアな声へがらっと変わるのが凄い！ピアノに相応しい声というものがあるからそうしているのかもしれない。日本人なら小田和正のクリアさ、歌い方のように。詞の深さも音楽家としての才を感じる。去った恋の儚い時間の中にあることばたち。一度読む価値はある。13、14は世界観が繋がっているようだ。タイトル通り夢想的で、詞は神秘的に云々よりも童話を子供に読んで聞かせるほどの柔らかさだ。
そして作品の注目所は15「心のままに」だろう。ライナー曰く、ボブ・ディランの作詞作曲にして未発表曲なのだそうだ。だがこんないい曲が本当にそうなの？といいたいし、それはビリーが完全に生を与えているからなのかもしれない。とにかくいい曲だ。詞も無求唯尽の「愛」で、その核心にリアルに迫る素晴らしさを持つ。
その他特筆はせずとも極上の曲、歌詞はたくさんある。彼はとにかくスゴイの一言である。

今さら語る必要もない今世紀最大のアーティストの一人。私は何と言ってもあのセクシーな歌声が大好きなんですが、ピアノの腕だけじゃなく作曲家としての才能も天才的で(最近はクラシック業界にも進出しているとか)彼の創り出す名曲の数々には駄作というものが皆無で、本アルバムでも捨て曲一切なく全てがパーフェクト!!

特に6曲目の〈レニングラード〉が最高。ロシアがソ連時代の都市名で旧PetersburgがLeningradに改名され、それがタイトル名として使われています。その発音の響きも好きなんですが、イントロのピアノのメロディが美しく歌詞の内容も泣けるんです。激動の冷戦時代を体験してきた者たちの友情を歌った曲で“レニングラードに来るまで本当の友を知らなかった”というフレーズには何度聴いても感動する。
他にも“And,so it goes”や“All about soul”など名曲ズラリ!(後半の方が素敵な曲多し)輸入版の楽譜が手に入り、毎日お気に入りの曲を弾いてビリー・ジョエルを堪能しています。お薦め!
