Alice in chainsの最高傑作であり、同時に凡そシアトルサウンドと言われるものの頂点に君臨するアルバムである。
このアルバムと匹敵するものはNirvanaのIn Uteroのみだろう。
(影響力という意味では、Nevermindだろうが)
よくAliceのことをメタル上がりで、偽グランジだと言う人がいる。

しかし、重要なことは、「如何に素晴らしいものを創ったか」という一点にかかっているのだということを忘れないで欲しい。
そもそもシアトル・サウンドとは、X世代の自己嫌悪と孤独感を表わしたものであったが、レイン・ステイリーは、人に生死への渇望感を抱かせるという点において、殆んど神の域だった。
ある評論家が、Aliceを90年代のPink Floydであると評価したが、ジェリー・カントレルこそは、正しくロジャー・ウォータースだった。
レインの尽きぬドラッグ癖の中、グランジでは例外的とも言えるツイン・ボーカルというスタイルをここに確立しざるを得なかったという、その「どうしよもない」という事実に反して、とてつもなく高度な音楽が創り出されてしまったのである。

1995年、多くのグランジバンドが失速していく中のことである。
レインの復帰を信じ、幾年という月日をシアトルで犬と散歩しつつ待ち続けたバンドに復活の二文字が訪れることは無かった。
また、このアルバムがあったからこそ、多くのファンはその二度と訪れるはずも無い復活を7年近くも待ち続けたのである。

俺にとってアリスとの最初の出逢いはこのアルバムだった。
当時はNIRVANAに人生観を変えられ、たまたま同じグランジに挙げられていたこのバンドに興味を持ち購入した。
その両バンドのヴォーカルが共に同じ道を辿ってしまったのはただただ哀しい…。
最初はさほどハマらなかったが、どこか心地良い音楽だった。
しかし、いつしか最も好きな一枚に変わっていた。
聴く毎にどんどん好きになっていた。
ジェリーの書くメロディはどこか独特で特殊だが美しい旋律を常に内包している。
今のラウド系の音楽に俺が不満を感じる点はメロディが希薄なモノが多く、「ただ重い音を出せば良い」的な印象を受けるからである。
BLACK SABBATHを継承するサウンドスタイルも好ましい。
かなり重い音であるにも関わらず、どこか落ち着く。
個人的にはスローテンポの曲調ゆえなのではないかと考える。人間が最も快感を覚えるテンポがサバスでありアリスの曲のテンポなのかもしれないと愚考してみる。
そしてなにより、レインの声は他の追随を許さない至高の存在である!
またこのアルバムにおけるレインの声は生気が失われていると思う。
しかし、それがサウンドと混じり合い、これ以上ないモノに変わっていると思う。

奇蹟の一枚だと思う、少なくとも俺にとっては。
前作「DIRT」も不屈の名作であり甲乙つけがたい。

今はただ…、レインが安らかに眠ってくれることを祈る…。

メタル寄りのグランジバンドという評価だったアリスインチェインズが、よりグランジ、スラッジ、ドゥ-ムに寄った重く粘つくサウンドへと変化した。
根底に宿るポップさは健在であり、思わず口ずさんでしまいたくなるメロディーも十分にアピールされている。
しかし、楽曲は過去最重を記録するほどの重苦しさ。

日本盤発売の際、ジャケットが問題となり発売が延期、ジャケット差し替えとなってしまった。
個人的には、芸術的とも言える妖しい三本足の犬をぜひ手にとって欲しい。
