   50年代末、それまでジャズの中心的なスタイルだったハードバップが、先鋭な発想をもったミュージシャンには飽き足らないものと映るようになっていた。そこでマイルス・ディヴィスは、煮詰まった音楽の一新を計るべく、ジャズの演奏原理に「モード」と呼ばれる新しい音楽理念を導入した。そのときに作ったのがこのアルバムである。

   発売と同時に大きな反響を呼んだこの演奏は、新時代のジャズとして、60年代のジャズシーンを主導する重要な歴史的役割を果たした。またこの作品は、ジャズファンだけでなく幅広い層から長期にわたって支持されたこともあって、ジャズアルバムでは異例ともいえるセールス枚数を記録している。

This is the one jazz record owned by people who don't listen to jazz, and with good reason. The band itself is extraordinary (proof of Miles Davis's masterful casting skills, if not of God's existence), listing John Coltrane and Julian "Cannonball" Adderley on saxophones, Bill Evans (or, on "Freddie Freeloader," Wynton Kelly) on piano, and the crack rhythm unit of Paul Chambers on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Coltrane's astringency on tenor is counterpoised to Adderley's funky self on alto, with Davis moderating between them as Bill Evans conjures up a still lake of sound on which they walk. Meanwhile, the rhythm partnership of Cobb and Chambers is prepared to click off time until eternity. It was the key recording of what became modal jazz, a music free of the fixed harmonies and forms of pop songs. In Davis's men's hands it was a weightless music, but one that refused to fade into the background. In retrospect every note seems perfect, and each piece moves inexorably towards its destiny. --John Szwed

JAZZのアルバムの中で、世界中でもっとも売れるこの"Kind of Blue"は、
JAZZの代名詞となってしまうかもしれない、という日本のJAZZミュージシャンがいる。
数十年後の世界では、JAZZというものを紹介するときに、このカテゴリーに他のもの、
例えばチャーリー・パーカー等のビバップなどは入らないことさえ考えられるかも、と。

それはさておき、Kind of Blueである。
マイルスのアルバムの中でも、押さえたムードの中でお洒落で都会的なサウンドが静かに展開される。
タイトルどおりちょっとブルーな雰囲気。
十代の頃に何十回も聞いたアルバムだ。一言で言うとマイルスのアルバムの中でも特に格好いいのだ。
マイルスの口癖でもあった"So What?"（だからどうしたってんだ？）から始まるこのアルバムの曲は、いつでも頭の中でリフレインする。
マイルスは、最晩年に至るまで、常にJAZZ界に新しいアイデアを提供してきた。
多くのミュージシャンがこのアルバムを聴きまくって、いろんなヒントを得たのも事実だ。
マイルスが亡くなったときにキース・ジャレットが「これからは誰がアイデアを提供するのだろう」と嘆いたのは有名だ。
モード奏法の確立したアルバム云々、このアルバムについての解説は恐ろしいほどの量だ。
だけど、虚心坦懐にこのサウンドに耳を傾けてほしい。
マイルスの終生変わらなかった洗練された、繊細なサウンドを楽しんでほしい、と思う。

そして若いリスナーには、”音楽の秘境”へと突き進んでいき、つねに驚嘆すべきサウンドを作り上げていった、
この天才ミュージシャンの７０年代、８０年代、９０年代のアルバムも聴いてもらえたら嬉しい。

　このアルバムの国内版のSACDは通常の2Chのステレオ版ですが、この輸入版のSACDには、マルチチャンネルとステレオの2種類の音源が収録されています。マルチチャネルで再生すると、小さなライブハウスで、ステージの直前で聞いているような感覚がします。演奏者の汗が飛んでくるような臨場感を味わえます。一方、ステレオで再生すると、比較的広いジャズハウスで、ステージから２０ｍほど離れた座席で、静かに落ち着いて聞いている感じです。これは有名なアルバムですので、このアルバムの解説は、簡単に入手できます。そのため、日本語のライナーノーツがなくても困りません。SACDのマルチチャネルの再生環境がある方は、こちらの輸入版をお勧めします。

アシュリー・カーン著「カインド・オブ・ブルーの真実」はこの歴史的な傑作の誕生の瞬間を捕らえた読み物として、非常に興味深く読み終えたが、２０世紀音楽史上の最大傑作のひとつとして、「カインド・オブ・ブルー」をお持ちでない方は今すぐ、お買い求めになることを強くお薦めする。この傑作の傑作たる所以は、当時のジャズ・シーンがもつ雰囲気と異質のグルーヴ感、ということに要約できると思う。当時のジャズ・シーンを席巻していたファンキー・ブームは所詮はハード・バップを源泉としており、ハード・バップの亜流に過ぎない訳であるが、マイルス・デイヴィスのこの作品は、ある日突然涌き出た泉として小生には映る。この異質なグルーヴ感は「モード」という手法が導入されたことによるものなのだそうだが、そんな小賢しく、専門的な言葉での論議はともかく、いままでの音とは全く違う感じを受ける。ここが重要と思う。確かにマイルスは「モード」という方法論で音楽を構築したのかもしれないが、しかしマイルスという人間がいなければ、この音は絶対に生まれなかったと確信する。リーダーとしての統率力がメンバー各々の卓越した技量（特にビル・エヴァンス）を引き出した傑作と思う。このＣＤをお求めになり、お聴きになって、なんか面白くないと思った方は何度も聴いて欲しい。世紀の傑作と楽しさは決して同義語ではない。楽しみたいのなら、ピーターソンを聴けば良いだ。絶対に感動するするときがかならず来る。小生はそう思う。蛇足ながら、このＣＤの海賊盤（当時のレコーディングがドキュメント風に記録されている）と上記の「カインド・オブ・ブルーの真実」を同時進行で読むと、セッションの状況がわかり、まるで自分がスタディオにいるかのような臨場感であった。貴重な体験であった。
