クリストファー・クロス1stの“spinning”のキュートなデュエットから興味を覚えた人で、その実ロ−ウェル・ジョージやＪ・テイラー、ジャクソン・ブラウンからも愛されたバックコーラスの達人。さっきライブ観てきたばかり。ホンモノのシンガーです。愛らしい少女がそのままおとなになったような人でした。このアルバムのラストの曲を自身のピアノの弾き語りでアンコール曲としていて、それは絶品でした。７０年代の音楽は本当にいろいろあってよかったけど、こういうアルバムこそゆっくり味わえる時を大切にしたい、と思う１枚です。バンド、リトルフィート、ジャクソン・ブラウン、カーラ・ボノフなどのニオイが好きならＯＫじゃないでしょうか。

ジャクソン・ブラウンやジェイムス・テイラーといった'70s SSWブームから活躍を続けているアーティストのバックヴォーカルとして実力・経歴を積み上げたヴァレリー・カーターのソロ1st作品('77年作)。
R&Bカバーもあれば、ソフト〜ブルージーなロック、カントリー風味など、よく言えば範囲を絞らずに対応できる彼女のヴォーカリストとしての実力も窺える作品かと思います。
勿論彼女自身の才もありますが、サポートに周っている多数の実力派ミュージシャンの数に驚かされます。
リンダ・ロンシュタット、ジェームス・ブラウン、モーリス・ホワイト(それにE,W＆Fの面子)、ロウウェル・ジョージ(リトル・フィート)、ジェフ・ポーカロ、ジョン・ホールなど等、恐らく(バックボーカルとしての)彼女に助けてもらったアーティストも多数いるのではないかと思われます。
キュートな顔立ちと柔らかくよく伸びる声。'70s中後期のソフト&メロウな感じを味わうには最適の一品です。

このあいだのこと、綾戸智絵のコンサートに出かけて彼女のややアップテンポの「ウー・チャイルド」を聴いて突然この人のことを思いだし、家に帰って聴き直した次第。やっぱり筆者にとってこの曲はヴァレリー・カーターのもの。

ルックスも声質も「寒色系」の人で、そこが好みかどうかで好き嫌いが分かれそう。ちょっとハスキーで。歌が巧いとは思わないけど、独自のものがあり、説得力が感じられ、リアルタイムでは大好きなひとりだった。出会いは「ジャケ買い」。
ローラ・アラン、リッキー・リー・ジョーンズ、ニコレッタ・ラーソンなどと共に良く聴いたなぁ（遠い目）。

いまは包容力が欲しいかな。そこが★ひとつ。
