Not since the days of the Clash and the MC5 has rock seen such political force as in the uncompromising debut from this L.A. quartet. Expanding the hip-hop/metal style of bands such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage tap the spirits of vintage Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, coupled with hardcore punk intensity and Public Enemy-style grooves. "Bombtrack" opens the LP with a shot of adrenaline and singer Zack de la Rocha's infuriated chorus of "Burn, burn, yes, you're gonna burn!" シンプルなリフ、歪んだベース、トムモレロの変態的なギター、ザックのラップ。レッチリ、フェイスノーモアなどから生まれたミクスチャーロックというカテゴリーを決定的に定義付けたCDといっても過言ではないと思う。大音量で聞くと頭を激しく振らずにはいられない。ロック、メタル、パンクなどカテゴリーを問わずバンドをやっている人は必ず聞くべきと思う。うわべだけでなく心が震える音質。それがこのCDの何よりの特徴だと思う。

　オルタナのあと、９０年代中ごろに登場し、コーン、リンプビズキットなどのような
いわゆるヘヴィロックをメジャーにしたバンド、レイジ・アゲインスト・
ザ・マシンの１作目です。

　ヒップホップとロックとメタルを混ぜて爆発させたような迫力あるサウンドが
持ち味です。レッド・ツエッペリンなどの影響も感じられ、早くはありませんが
重くビートの利いた曲が展開しています。彼らはエフェクタなどの機材を使わず、
最小限の機材で音を作っています。

　又彼らの特徴として、政治に対しての異議申し立てを行っているということが
あります。ロックは異議申し立ての道具であると言ったような発言もしていますし、
このアルバムのジャケットは、宗教弾圧に抗議して焼身自殺を図った、徳の高い
お坊さんの有名な写真です。

　カヴァーアルバムを含め４枚のアルバムを製作後、解散。ヴォーカルのザックは
ヒップホップのアルバムを製作しているとの噂です。ザックを除くメンバーは、
サウンドガーデンのヴォーカルのクリス・コーネルを迎え、オーディオ
スレイヴを結成しました。

レイジの１st.アルバム(９２年作品)。このアルバムは、サンプリング、キーボード、シンセサイザーなどは一切使用せず、ギター、ベース、ドラム、そして人間の生声だけで創られている。そのシンプルかつソリッドな音が心にズシズシ響いてくる。この感覚は他のバンドではそうそう味わえない。少し大袈裟な表現かもしれないが、個人的に RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE というバンドは「２０世紀の偉大なる遺産」だと思っている。９０年代を生きた証として是非とも持っておきたい１枚である。このアルバムを気に入った方は、ＤＶＤ『RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE(同タイトル)』も見ていただきたい。映像のレイジはもっと熱い!↑!
