今でも決して魅力が衰えた訳ではないけれど、Mariah Careyが一番の輝きを誇っていた時期は紛れも無くこの時期だったのだろうと思う。90年代の音楽業界を見ても、彼女と他のアーティストとは間違いなく大きな差があったように感じる。そういった時期のUnpluggedライヴの出演だけに、この音源は非常に貴重であるように思うし、彼女の素晴らしさを再認識するのに優れたアルバムであると思う。

1992年に行われたこのライヴは、それまでは業界関係者の為だけのシークレットギグは何度かあったらしいが、Mariahにとって、実際ファンという聴衆に向けての初のライヴであった。気負いや緊張は確かにあったと思うけれど、Mariah自身が人前で歌う事を純粋に楽しんでいたライヴであったように思う。アメリカのショウビジネスという、とても過酷な世界にまだ浸りきっていない、自分の夢を実現させた一人の女性がそこにいるように感じる。だからこそ、その素晴らしい歌声がさらに力を持って聴こえてくるのだろうと思う。

オープニングナンバー"Emotion"でそんなMariahの力が余す所なく発揮されているように思う。そして彼女が幼い頃熱中していた、Jackson 5の"I'll Be There"は原曲にも劣らないスリリングなヴォーカルを聴かせてくれる。収められた楽曲の数は少ないけれど、どの曲もバックのゴスペル隊と心地良く絡み合った、美しい歌の世界を贅沢に堪能できる作品だと僕は思う。

たしかマライアって最初の頃はほとんどオーディエンスの前で歌ったことがなかったんだよね。それで、マライアの歌唱力はフェイクなんじゃないかって疑う人も出てきちゃったんだ。そんなときにこのアルバムがでて、彼女の実力は本物だということを世に知らしめたってわけだ。どの曲においてもマライアのパフォーマンスは凄いの一言だね。そのなかでもとくにイチオシなのは、カバー曲ではあるけどアイルビーゼアですね。このパフォーマンスにはマライアの魅力がすべて詰まっているように思います。もし一枚だけマライアのアルバムを選ぶとすれば、ミニアルバムではありますが私は迷わず本作品を選びます。ライヴのミニアルバムなので最高傑作なる言葉は不適当かもしれませんが、やっぱりこのライヴはサイコーだよ!

「MTV UNPLUGGED」ファンが彼女のライブを聴くことが出来る最初の
機会であった。
そしてマライア初のライブステージでありながら、アコースティックな
バックサウンドで聴かせるUNPLUGGEDのステージは、彼女の新しい
魅力が引き出され、永遠の名作となった。
最初から大スターであった彼女だが、ステージでは初々しさが感じら
れ、初期の名曲の数々をゆったりと歌っている。
オリジナルサウンドとは違った魅力を聴かせるライブ版としては、
究極なものの１つであろう。
