当然作曲家であればある程度楽器の演奏にも精通していないといけないだろうし、演奏家として著名な人も、幼少の頃受けた音楽教育の一環として作曲の手ほどきを受けた例も多いだろう。では作曲と演奏の双方で高い名声を受けた人物を、私は多く知らない。ラフマニノフ、パガニーニ、最近ではブリテンくらいか。ディヌ・リパッティ、サンソン・フランソワも作曲を手がけているが、彼らの演奏の軌跡ほどの評価は得られていない、というのが実情ではないか。
前置きが長くなったが、このCDはグールドが作曲した曲が収められている。先ほどまでと違うのは、彼が作曲したのは鍵盤楽器の曲ではなく、弦楽四重奏と四重唱なのである。つまり彼は自分の曲の演奏に参加していないわけだ。さて果たしてこれらは成功例なのか？弦楽四重奏は単一楽章で36分というとんでもない長さ。聴いてみると溢れんばかりにいろんな楽想が浮かび上がっていることは良くわかるが、聴く側としてはいささか脈絡無く、集中力が持たない。実験的な作品の域を出ないものである。だが声楽曲はなかなか良い。いかにもグールドと思わせるお得意のフーガを織り交ぜ、聞き飽きない楽しい曲に仕上がっており、思わずニンマリする。あとはショスタコとプーランクのグールド自身の演奏があるが、頗る音が悪く、おまけ的なもの。総体的にはグールドマニア向けのレアものCD、という結論になるのだが・・このレビューで興味沸きましたか？
