私にとってはプロコフィエフがメインです。「打倒ホロヴィッツ」に燃えていたものの、結局飽きて放り出したプロジェクトの産物ではありますが、「あの血塗られた楽章をスポーツに変えてしまった」と評される第三楽章を聴けば、ここまでやってしまったら飽きてしまうのも仕方ないような気がする、そんな凄い代物です。聴くだけでアドレナリンが出ます。

　このディスクの重要性は、何といってもショパンにある。彼がショパンを弾きたがらなかったというのは有名な事実であり、そんな彼がショパンのしかも大曲ソナタ第３番を収録していたことはそれだけでもう大事件である。

　彼は一般にはバッハ弾きのイメージが強いが、彼の持つ綺麗に整ったタッチや音色、厳格な構成感がバッハにぴったりであると感じている（もしかするとこれはバッハを弾くために出来上がったものかもしれないが）。

　さてこのショパンだが、私が過去に聴いたどの第３番よりもかなりゆっくりしたテンポで弾き始めている。しかしここを聴いただけでも明らかに演奏者がグールドであることが認識できるほど強烈な個性を放っているのだ。まさしくゴールドベルクやイタリア協奏曲でお馴染みのあの音だ。そして彼が執拗に浮かび上がらせる副旋律などは、まるでバッハのインベンションを聴いているかのような錯覚を聴き手に与える。そう、ちょうど現代にバッハがよみがえったらこんなショパンを弾くのかもしれない。賛否両論はあると思うが、確かにショパン演奏における解釈の違った一面を示していると思う。

晩年のショパンがバッハの鍵盤作品を好んで演奏していたのは有名な話だ。ショパンが弾くバッハがどんな感じだったのかはとても気になるが、それ以上にバッハ弾きであるグールドの演奏するショパンには興味をそそられる。

グールドによるロマン派作品の演奏は、意外にも耽美的側面が強く出た演奏になることが多い。このショパンのソナタの演奏でもその特徴がよくあらわれている。第１、３楽章では比較的ゆっくりとしたタイムを採用し、うるおいのあるサウンドで充分に旋律を歌い込むので、昨今のショパン弾き以上にロマンティクな印象を受ける。

しかしその全体的な印象に反して、グールドの意図は、このソナタの中にまぎれているバッハ的な特徴を拾い出すことにあるようだ。つまり多声的な処理に着目し、それぞれの旋律を対等に歌わせようとする。各声部をラインとして歌わせるためには、響かせるための充分なスペースを各音に与えてやる必要がある。そのため若干遅めのタイムを採用したのだろう。

この目論みは事前の想像以上に成功したのではないだろうか。拾いだされた各声部はどれも耳を惹く美しさを備えており、それらの聴かせるアンサンブルは立体的な奥行きをこの作品に与えている。それは強い魅力を放っており、グールドがそれらを拾いだそうとしたのも納得である。

このように、グールドはかなり独創的な視点から作品を掘り下げているのだが、意外なことに、演奏全体の印象はポリーニによる演奏にかなり近い。ぜひ聴き比べてほしい。グールドの解釈が単に奇抜なものではなく、充分に妥当性が検討された結果だということがわかると思う。
