Even though it is not as consistently convincing as Mahavishnu's first two albums, this fifth, 1975 outing nonetheless provides plenty of the same listening rewards--urgent, inexorably forceful jazz-rock fusion with an intense interactivity among the players. Jean-Luc Ponty provides the fresh interest. Always most convincing when employed, rather than in charge, here he revels in the open spaces and blissed prompting that McLaughlin's celestial-run formula provides. The album was one of a few later Mahavishnu recordings that announced that the revolutionary band's mission was near completion, and perhaps already played out. McLaughlin's playing soars at some points, but it was time for him to leave the capsule, and settle into a new phase: his extraordinary Shakti collaborations. --Peter Monaghan

もうこれはジャズだのロックだの、フュージョンだのと言う問題ではなく、巨大編成のバンドがなしとげた完成型のアルバムです。それぞれのミュージシャンがバランスよく音を響かせバラエティに富んだ内様は独特であり、何か宗教的な思想すらも感じ取れます。かと言って、難解ではなく、彼等の作品中最もポップな印象を受けます。特筆はジャンリュック・ポンティとジョン・マクラフリンのバトルは壮絶であり、後にも先にもこれ以上のハイテンションな演奏は無いと言い切れます。またチック・コリアの奥さんになったゲイル・モランの美しいソプラノボイス（ピアノ担当）が印象的であり、このアルバムに奥いき、深みを与えています。荒削りな印象の強いこのバンドのイメージを変えることにも成功していると思います。

日本盤題名「エメラルドの幻影」。ＬＰは見開きダブルジャケットで、中面には菱形の枠内にバンド・メンバーのライブ時の写真が並べられ、両端に当時のマクラフリンのグル（ヒンドゥの師匠）だったスリ・チンモイ師の肖像が飾られています。マクラフリンがそうした精神性に最も傾いた時期に収録されたこのアルバムは、文字通りロックやジャズやクラシックというジャンルを超越したサウンドで精神的ニルヴァナ（涅槃）の境地へと誘ってくれます。音楽的なコメントをさせていただくと、まず第一期マハヴィシュヌと比べて最も大きな変化となったのが、ブラスセクションと多少のコーラス隊が加わったこと。随所に鋭く切り込むブラス・アンサンブルのスリルは、チェイスなどのブラスロックをも彷彿とさせます。また、インプロビゼーション・パートでのアコースティックとエレクトリックの配分が申し分なく、マクラフリンのギターはもとより、バイオリン一つとっても、エレクトリックはジャン・リュック・ポンティ、アコースティックはスチーブ・カインドラーと絶妙な使い分けを行っていて、各ソロイストの才能を十二分に引き出すことに成功しています。さらにアップテンポな曲でのナラダ・マイケル・ウォルデンによる初代ビリー・コブハムを凌ぐ凄まじいツインバスドラムの連打、ファンキー調な曲でのラルフ・アームストロング（後にポンティのバンドに参加）のうねるベース、後にチック・コリア夫人となりチックのバンドに加入したゲイル・モランの繊細なピアノタッチとヴォイスの優しい響きなど、どこをとっても超一級のレベルの演奏を聞かせゾクゾクさせます。もう３０年近くも思い出してはレコード棚から引っ張り出してきて聞き直していますが、聞く度に唸らされるレコードの一つです。

壮絶なライブアルバム「BETWEEN~」をもって第１期の活動を終了したマハビシュヌの第２期のアルバムです。

第２期のサウンド面での変化といえば、ボーカルパートを何曲かで導入していることです。ただ、マハビの妖しいサウンドに合ったボーカルになっており、神秘的なサウンド作りに貢献しています。そして最大の変化は、ヴァイオリンがジャンリュックポンティに変わったことでしょうか。マハビの最大の売りであったインストバトルはマクラフリンvsポンティのギターとヴァイオリンのバトルにより、より聴き応えを増しています。
マクラフリン、ポンティ、そしてインストバトルファンにお奨めしたいアルバムです。
