このスケールの大きさはなんなんだろう。青くみずみずしいポップながらもどこかゴスペル的でさえある。そして全編にわたって徹頭徹尾にロマンティックだ。しかし甘すぎない芯の強さも備えている。相変わらずソングライティングが冴えまくっている。凝ったコード進行や転調が用いられているが技巧におぼれることなくどれもが普遍性に貫かれている。ただ舌を巻くしかない。冒頭でゴスペル的と書いたが、パディマクアルーン流のゴスペルソング15もある。これは神の視点から、こう歌われている。「私にむかって深い献身の賛美歌など歌ってくれるな　ゆったりとした甘いメロディーなど歌ってくれるな　弱きものの一人にむかって歌うがいい　そのとき兄弟よ　あなたの歌は私にとどく」なんとも、神の存在は特に信じてはいないけど、ほんとグッとくる。どの曲も詩作が素晴らしいのも特筆すべき点だ。

９０年発表の５作目。この作品は名作の多い彼らの作品の中でも別格。予定していた製作日数が大幅に延びたためにオクラ入りしていた『プロテスト・ソング』が蔵出しされたことは有名だろう。しかし本作はその時間延長を物ともしない作品に仕上がっている。最高傑作と言っても良い、３ｒｄや２ｎｄを軽く蹴散らすかのようなこの作品の仕上がりには驚くばかり。細部まで丁寧に作られたサウンドに舌を巻くかのような傑出した名曲が１９曲も詰まっている。正座して聴きたくなるほどのクオリティながら、作品そのものはゆったりと豊かな時間が流れていくかのようなやさしさに包まれている。元々このアルバムはアメリカの伝説的アウトロー、ジェシー・ジェイムスをコンセプトにした作品の予定だったらしいが、途中でそのコンセプトは頓挫。頓挫というよりはコンセプトが発展してしまったとするのが妥当なのかもしれないが、何にしても楽曲ありきの作品になったことは間違い無い。
全体的にややロック的な迫力は乏しいものの、彼ら本来のエレガントさとメロディの良さはこの作品が一つの頂点であり、個人的には彼らにこれ以上は求めるものがないほどの完全無欠の作品である。
とにかく聴いた後の高揚感と満足感が全く違う。音楽が全て終わった後の余韻すら素晴しい。

このアルバムが1000円足らずで買えるなんて、なんていい時代に
なったんだと思う。様々なオマージュ、隠喩を散りばめながら、
最終的にはひとつのパーフェクトなポップアルバムとなっている。
メロディーは勿論、アレンジも絶品。
ひとつのポップミュージックの究極形。
