８５年は発表の第作目です。当時飛ぶ鳥を落とす勢いだったアーサー・ベイカーその他のプロデュースという鳴り物入りの前評判でしたが、あのマーティン・スコセッシによる日本での撮影が評判になったプロモともども「なんだかなあ」といった作品でした。その前後の二回目の日本公演でもトム・ぺティに持って行かれる場面がしばしばで、「ダーク・アイズ」といった佳曲もありますが、ディラン最初の一枚にはとてもお勧めできないです。ただ、その後ブートレッグ・シリーズで日の目を見た「タイト・コネクション」のオリジナル・ヴァージョンを始め、文字通りブートで聴くことのできるデモ・ヴァージョンやオーヴァー・プロデュースされる前の状態ではこのアルバムからの曲はいいものが多いので、自伝その他で言われるように単純にスランプの時期と片付けるのはどうかとも思います。

詩、サウンド共に、ディランのキャリアの中で最も直球なアルバムです。ほとんどがラヴ・ソングで共感し易く（無論言葉仕掛けはバッチリありますが）、初期を大体聴いてしまって、さて次は･･･と考えていらっしゃる方におススメです。１曲目「タイト・コネクション」は詩、メロディーとも非常にポップで、それでいてディランならではのストーリー構成も完璧な名曲。心ならずも恋人に辛くあたってしまったり、あるいはつまらない夫婦喧嘩をしてしまったりした時に聴いてほしいと思います（いや、マジで）。
ミック・テイラーがギターを弾いているナンバーが何曲かありますが、ディランのゲスト、という観点からすると、かなり思いっきり弾いている方ではないでしょうか。ストーンズ時代を彷彿させますね。

ラストの「ダーク・アイズ」のみアコースティックギターの弾き語り。これでリスナーはノックアウトでしょう。

一発パフォーマンスが身上のディランにしてはめずらしく、嫌いなスタジオ・ワークに専念して、こんなに手の込んだ自信作を発表した。ボーカルは素晴らしいし、サウンドもみずみずしい。詩にはさまざまな仕掛けがあって、しかも新しく、おしゃれでユーモアもある。まさに『バーレスク帝国』というウイットたっぷりのタイトルに恥じない。ディランもかなり自信があったに違いない。
ところが、「どこにもない、誰も聴いたことのない音楽」はやはり、あまり理解されなかったのであった。一曲目はぼくの大好きな歌だが、これを聴いてもわかるように、あまりにユニークで、唯一無二。でも、ちゃんと本物のサウンドがある。

プロモーション・ビデオは変な監督のせいで滅茶苦茶だったし、レコード会社は同時期発売した『バイオグラフ』のほうを売りたかったみたいであんまり宣伝してなかったし、ジャケットデザインは見当はずれ。かわいそうなボブちゃんは、これっきりもう、手の込んだアルバムを作り込むということを、自分ではしなくなっちゃったのでありました。

でも、いいアルバムなんですな。「好きなディラン・ベスト3」にはあまり出てこないけど、わりとファンの間で親しまれている作品です。
