BRUCEがEストリートバンドと録音するつもりで作ったデモテープをそのまま
作品として発売した異色作。
４トラックレコーダーなので多少のオーバーダブはされているが、
基本的にはアコギの弾き語り。
バンド演奏してみても、このデモテープ以上に作品世界に入れなかった
というのがその理由。まあ有名な話なので誰でも知っていますよね。
そういいながらこの後のツアーなどでは結構バンドアレンジで演奏されて
しまったりしてますけどね。（笑）
一曲目の「判事さんは理由を知りたがるけど、世の中にはただ卑劣というだけの
こともあるんだよ」と救いようのない台詞で終わる1を筆頭に内容はとにかく暗い。
でも彼の歌の世界は絶望だけでは終わらないところが多少あるところが救いといえば救い。
5はショーン・ペンによって「インディアン・ランナー」という映画になっております。

はじめて聞いたスプリングスティーンのアルバムがこれだった。
だからそれからずっと、２０年以上、ブルース・スプリングスティーンは「どうしようもないこと」をうたう人だと思ってきた。
抗議でもない。諦めかというと少し違う。ただこのような思いが厳然としてそこにあること、全１１曲そのことだけを言っている。

「リバー」や「トム・ジョード」、「ボーン・イン・ザ・ＵＳＡ」の曲にもあるのだけど、彼はときどき「空っぽな残虐さ」をポンと放り出すように描写する。ブルースにはたしかに、コミュニティや人の絆を大事にする良識・善意の人としての側面もあるが、このアルバムで表現される世界は私をとても強く惹き付け続けている。

リリース当時、ティアックのＭＴＲで録音した弾き語りのデモテープを
そのままリリースしたということが賛否両論を巻き起こした記憶がある。
後から伝え聞くところによると、‘ Born in The U.S.A. ’と同時期に
レコーディングされていたらしい。

本人が奏でるアコースティックギターとハーモニカ以外の楽器は入っておらず、
飾り気のない歌の骨格だけがリスナーに提示される。
無駄のない表現で淡々と描かれる歌詞の世界は、精緻な筆致で描かれた
水墨画を思わせる。

そしてまた、これ以降の彼のソングライティングに一貫して存在する
「視点」が、このアルバムで露見しているように思えてならない。
アルバムを通してテーマとなっているのは、どうしようもない現実と
それに対峙する普通の人たち。
「連続殺人に罪の呵責を感じない殺人犯」
「どん詰まりの状況の中でかすかな希望にすがって駆け落ちする男」
「罪を犯した兄をあえて見逃す警察官の弟」etc・・・
おそらくは、商業主義のポップミュージックが「商売にならない」という
理由で取り上げないテーマばかりだ。
スプリングスティーンの場合、常に「アメリカの」という
形容詞がついてまわるが、ここに描かれていることは
世界のあちこちで起こりうる・・・、
いや、現実に起こっていることだと思う。
彼のソングライターとしての拠り所、テーマはどこにあるのかを示すと共に、
本来の歌の力とはアレンジの巧拙とは別のところにあることを示した
アルバムと言えるだろう。
ちなみに、自分のお気に入りは、後にバンドアレンジでも歌われた02.
貧富の格差を嘆くでもなく淡々と描いた 03. である。

余計なお世話かもしれないが、シンガーソングライターを名乗る人、
目指す人たち、いや、既存の音楽業界で働いている人たちにも
（まだ聴いたことがないのであれば）一度は聴いてほしいアルバムだ。
