70年代ジャズロックシーンを代表するベーシスト、スタンリー・クラークの初期作品です。ジョージ・ベンソンなどを輩出したCTIレーベルから1974年にリリース。何といっても参加メンバーが豪華で、ヤン・ハマー（シンセ）、トニー・ウィリアムス（ドラム）、ビル・コナーズ（ギター）という当時としてはまさに「最強」というべきスターたちの名前が見られます。

RTF時代では御体チック・コリアに遠慮がちだったクラークとギターのビル・コナーズがまさに本領発揮という感じで暴れまくっているのが痛快です。若き2人の暴れぶりを増長させているのは、実はトニー・ウィリアムスではないでしょうか。それは4曲目の「Power」での爆音のようなドラムを基盤にファンキーなクラークがしっかりとリズムを支え、ハマーとコナーズの白人プレイヤーが自由自在に宙を舞うという構造に象徴されています。この曲でのファンクからスペーシーサウンドへと見事に転換するあたりは、いま聴き直してもゾクゾクするほどの鮮やかさです。RTFではありえなかったファンク色がこの作品の魅力を高めていることは明白です。ギターのコナーズもRTFのスパニッシュテイストよりも、数段馴染んでいるように思えます。ただ、あえて言うと5曲目のストリングスをまじえたベースソロ曲は蛇足だと思いますが、ご愛嬌という程度で目くじらを立てるほどではないでしょう。

ボスであるチック･コリアの全面的バックアップでつくられたソロ･デビュー作に続き、いよいよ親離れして自らの音楽を掲げ、自らの名前をアルバムタイトルに冠してつくられた実質的なソロ･デビュー作とも言える。コリアの影響を払拭するかのような、また、ここから始まるスタンの快進撃を予感させるような、エネルギーの横溢したすばらしい作品となっている。なんと言っても特筆すべきは、ドラムスにあのトニー･ウイリアムスを起用したことだろう。スタンにとってReturn to Foreverでの同僚レニー･ホワイトやその後のソロ作に起用するスティーヴ･ガッドとは全く異なり、ジャズのドラム奏法を切り拓いてきたトニーのドラムは、良い意味でタイトさがなく、自由度溢れる中にロックのワイルドさを発散させたゾクゾクするようなビートを繰り出しており、スタンのベースとのミーティングはスリルに溢れている。このアルバムからエレクトリックベースを武器にシーンを牽引するスタンであるが、そのすばらしい捨てがたい魅力のウッドベースを用いた小品をはさみ、アルバムとしても見事にスタンリー･クラーク色を打ち出した作品となっている。

スタンのネンペラー・レーベル移籍第１弾で、ジャズ・ロックもしくはクロスオーバーと言われていた頃のアルバムです。ドラムスの故トニー・ウイリアムスが自身のバンド「ライフタイム」を凌ぐ凄まじいスティックさばきを披露していて、まず度肝を抜かれます。リズムをキープしないので全然ロックになっていませんが、かといってフリージャズでもなく、基本的に熱いビートを叩き出しているところが、全く新境地のドラムスとしか言いようがありません。加えて早引きなのかノーテンキなのか判らないグニュグニュした音色のビル・コナーズのエレキ・ギターもヤン・ハマーに煽られて次第に大興奮の坩堝へと誘います。正にロック・インプロヴィゼーションと言うに相応しい作品で、個人的には高校時代はこれをヘッドホンで大音量で毎日のように聴いていました（今はさすがにほとんど聴きませんが）。ブランドＸを始め、この種の音楽をその後あまた聴きあさりましたが、これに類似するサウンドには今日に至るま出会ったことがないのが不思議です。やはりこの唯一無二性は、個性派ソロイストに依るところが大きかったのだと思います。あまり関係ありませんが、大橋巨泉さんが昔やっていた日本テレビの「１１ＰＭ」という深夜番組の釣りコーナーでこの曲をバックに使っていましたが、なるほど、小音量だとそういうＢＧＭ的な使い方もできないこともない音楽でもあります。
