1979年作品。再生派キリスト教に入信したボブ・ディランが、キリスト教と深く関わる内容のアルバムを完成させる。彼の変容振りに慣れているはずにも関わらず、宗教に傾倒すると言うディランの大きな変化しかも突然の出来事に対して批判的な意見が噴出。しかしながら南部で活躍するジェリー・ウェクスラーとバリー・ベケットをプロデューサーに据え、当時新進バンドであったダイア・ストレイツのギタリスト、マーク・ノップラーをゲストに迎えてのタイトな音作りは歌にマッチしその世界に力と深みを与え、後に傑作アルバムの一つに上げられるようになる。シングル「ガッタ・サーヴ・サムバディ」はヒットし、ディランにとっての初のグラミー賞＜最優秀男性ロック歌手＞に選ばれた。

　映画『ハイ・フィディリティ』のなかでジャック・ブラックが言う、「『ブロンド・オン・ブロンド』を持っていないなんて犯罪だぜ」
　ディラン・ファンではなくとも、『ブロンド…』をはじめとする彼のいくつかの「名盤」をそろえて、罪を免れている(？）人も多いだろう。
　ディランはキャリアが長いから、発表したアルバムには傑作も駄作もある。そもそもディランは、そんなに意気込んでアルバム製作をしていないように思う。彼の大半の曲は一発録りで済まされている。レコーディングの出来・不出来を左右しているのは、そのときどきでディランをサポートしたミュージシャンと、何よりも彼の気分なのだろう。
　本作は例外的に、ディランが強い意気込みで製作に臨んだアルバムである。とはいえ別に「名盤」を作ろうと意図したわけではない。ボーン・アゲイン・クリスチャンに改宗し、ゴスペル・アルバムを作ろうとしたディランが、なんとしてもファンに納得してもらえるものを作りたかったのだ。そのために抜擢されたマーク・ノップラーのギターが冴え渡る。「スロー・トレイン」での彼のプレイは、高い完成度を要求された緊張感が伝わってきて、まさに「名演」である。
